RSBreth Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Hoppers can be good at times...I'll toss a Madame X if they are looking up, and they wont inhale a Sneaky Pete...the smaller profile helps sometimes. The ones I tie for Smallies are pretty big, actually. Tied on a #6 Tiemco 8089.
Brian Wise Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Fished these all summer on the Bryant....tore 'em up! Bottom Bouncing: Hogan's Bass Cracker Baitfish Imitation: Garrett's Belly Dancer Topwater: Warm Water Whammy They are "fishy." My Youtube Channel
eric1978 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Those are sweet. What's hanging out of the Bass Cracker's butt? I'm not gonna say what I think it looks like.
Gavin Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I usually toss a Madame X tied on a size 2 TMC 200R...probably similar in size to a #6 on an TMC 8089. Those are some sweat looking bugs Brian.
Members Yakfly Posted February 28, 2011 Members Posted February 28, 2011 Yakfly, how big are your pencil poppers, how and were do you fish them? I tie from the kit you get 10 bodies and 10 kink shank hooks - the bodies taper down at one end. So you can tire the pencil popper, or turn it around for a slider/sneaky pete profile. About 2 inches long body, and thick as a #2 pencil until the taper. The batch I used last year were plain white body with the popper "face" painted red, and 4 rubber legs through the body. Worked better than any of the overdressed ones I had. Presentation, I cast as close to cover as I can, and just vary the retrieve. Like said, sometimes dead drift, sometimes work it a bunch - I just have to let the smallies let me know what they want on any given day If there is any take away for me, it's the LESS I do (fly dressing, presentation, etc...) the more fish I catch.
Members Yakfly Posted February 28, 2011 Members Posted February 28, 2011 Anybody ever tied/tried the "Spinnered Minner" that Fox Stadtler developed? Basically an in-line spinner for the fly rod. I have been hesitant to get the materials needed, but they look deadly for smallmouth.
flytyer57 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Anybody ever tied/tried the "Spinnered Minner" that Fox Stadtler developed? Basically an in-line spinner for the fly rod. I have been hesitant to get the materials needed, but they look deadly for smallmouth. When I first saw them I thought about tying some. Then I thought that if I were to use a spinnerbait, I'd just get the spinning rod out. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
