Members ckjacks Posted February 26, 2011 Members Posted February 26, 2011 We went up the Kings this morning in search of some walleye, but we didn't have much luck. About 8:30 we saw quite a few gulls diving so we went to investigate. We found some whites busting shad and were able to catch 11 of them. There were a few LM's mixed in with them which added to the excitement. It would be pretty hot and heavy for 5 mins, then dead, then on fire, then dead...... We were not too far up the kings. It was a cold, but exciting morning. All of the fish were stuffed with eggs and shad. I attached a pic of a couple of the better ones.
Sam Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 "Chasing the boils" for white bass - that's a fun way to fish, for me. Whatever I'm fishing for, I usually keep one rod rigged with a 1/4 oz. Roostertail that I can throw a long ways, just in case I hear that "waterfall" in the distance. When conditions are right I've chased bunches of feeding seagulls on these lakes too, because that usually means some shad are trapped on top between the gulls and the white bass. It's like a smaller version of fishing the Pacific, where diving gulls often show where barracuda, bonito, or yellowtails are feeding on anchovies. Fun.
Champ188 Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 I keep Roostertails handy myself, Sam. Not always tied on but where I can grab one pretty quick. Probably not a better all-around bait in the world for catching schooling fish of any variety.
Stoneroller Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 try a small lipless crankbait in that situation too. usually some real monster fish are lurking below the school of fish. topwater pop-r can be lots of fun too, especially when a gull has a go at it. Never have caught many, but get lots of bite offs from Feb-late Mar on hula grubs, little brown jigs, fishing bluff ends from a couple miles either way of Viola park. Also when carolina rigging on the deep gravel inside turns thru the same 4-5 miles of water. Usually 10-20' on the ends, out much deeper on the gravel places, closer to the taper into the channel. Take it with the proverbial salt, as it is from a dedicated not interested in initentionally fishing for eyes dude.
