Plans For Portable Fly Tyning Box

Hello fellow Fly Tiers.

I have look through the forum and can not find any posts about plans for a portable fly tying box. I am a firefighter and want to build a box that i can back and forth to work so i can tie in my down time. I have had trouble finding a good set of plans on the web. Does anyone have and suggestions?

I know it isn't what you are looking for, but for a quick fix in the meantime I have seen guys that tie up at the pavilion at Taney use those big ol' Plano boxes with all the drawers and compartments.

I made one with-out-plans for a teen who goes to bass pro in KC at tying classes.

Just looked on the net for pics. measure you're stuff and build accordingly. Doors that are 1'' or so deep with adj. shelves in them drawers with dividers etc. they can really be tricked out and get heavy in a hurry even out of 1/4'' and 1/2''ply.

I rarely tie on a trip...but I used an old briefcase when I used to do classes & demo's...fill it with what you need for a pattern or three. Cheers.

I've got two versions of portable fly tying setups: The Rubbermaid tub that fits everything I've got, and the no-name nylon bag thingy with a few compartments that carries a little stuff. If I'm heading out for a few days, have room and am staying in a motel, I'll drag the big one. If I wade/camp I might bring the small one with enough materials to tie a few flies. If I float/camp I don't carry anything. Never really cared for any of the pre-made ones I've seen. Either too small, too large, too gimicky, not laid out well or too expensive. Other people's ideas of how to store stuff usually don't work for me anyhow. So, I'd suggest spec out what you want, and get creative to find something that fits your needs at Wal-Mart.

I have the fispond bag and love it, will hurt the pocketbook though. I carry it when camping, and a big snap lid rubbermaid holds the rest of my crap.

Here is one that has been around for a while, the Bug Box. If you are handy with wood, you should be able to figure out how to build your own. We used to sell them a long time ago.

Personally, I use a shower kit bag for tools and spools, keep all other stuff on split rings and plastic zip lock bags. I stuff it in a duffel bag with a small table top tying stand.

A Gerstner type wooden tool chest is great too, it is pretty heavy to pack around. You can find knock off's at Harbor Freight for around $100. The front folds down to make a tying table.
