Members drath Posted March 9, 2011 Members Posted March 9, 2011 I’ve recently won an ebay auction for a new float tube (Creek Company ODC 420). I’m new to the whole float tube thing but I know I want to get it out on the water ASAP. If there are any float tubers in the St. Louis area, where do you go close to home? Lakes, ponds, streams, warm water, cold water, bass, crappie, gills, carp, trout, spinning, casting, fly rods, anything. I’m just looking for a place to literally, get my feet wet, close to home. If you want to share any other information with me please feel free. Areas not so close to home, rod holder mods etc. Thanks -D
Gavin Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Simpson, Creve Couer, and Spanish Lake allow public boat access, so does Port Hudson Lake up toward Owensville...I've taken a canoe out on Simpson a few times with mixed results (crappie & bass) but I havent fished the other lakes. There are some strip pits down in Catawissa too.

timinmo Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 There are several sort floats on the Big River from Washington State Park down. Put-ins at Highway 21, Mammoth, Merril Horse, Browns Ford. From 21 down to Washington State Park is, I think about 3 miles the others are about 5. I have floated all of them but have no idea of travel time for a float tube compared to a canoe. The shuttle from 21 to the park swim beach is short and so is the float so that is where I would probably start. While the Big River is not the most scenic of streams but the fishing is usually OK. Lots of Spots. Not much tricky water so I think it would be good to learn on but I have never been in a float tube. Hope this helps. Tim

Ted Calcaterra Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Gavin - Is Catawissa a typical deep strip pit or shallow and sandy. Is it clear enough to target flyfishing for carp? I have found lakes such as Busch that contain carp but visibility seems to be 6" at best most days. Makes it tough for carp fishing. Still haven't found that good carp spot.

Gavin Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Ted, Its been years....One of my dad's hunting buddies took us bow fishing down there a couple times. We caught a couple bass, shot carp & gar.
