Gavin Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Buy a copy of Joe Humphrey's "Trout Tactics" and it will tell you everything you need to know about nymphing without an indicator...and allot more. Rainbows are flat out suckers for eggs & flashy little nymphs..Browns seem to like drab colored nymphs better than the flashy stuff. Cheers.
mic Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I heard the 1 1/2 times the stream bottom, but not length pus a foot I don't think you will. I just kept shorting the tippet until I didn't have any more problems, and it worked out to an average of depth plus foot to foot and a half...every hole is different though. That is why I use the ring. I was constantly changing tippet at every hole and burning through leader to fast for my taste.
dennis boatman Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Get rid of the Bobber (indicator), and as mentioned, shorten your leader, be stealthy, and fish closer to your position keeping your rod high, and focus. Works for me... A strike indicator is just a bobber...

Works for me... Concentrate... I do that all week at work and why I go fishing on the weekends. I've tried that approach, and I don't have the touch...yet. I'll keep at though.

I like the tippet ring idea, i used up a ton of leader adding new tippet Luke Walz

dennis boatman Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I may miss fish going bobberless, but it's just a personal choice. Tried a bobber once for about 15 minutes, and couldn't keep the trout from hitting the it...found it annoying. I guess to me, it isn't so much about catching, but the satisfaction of tying my own flies and just being out there. I really enjoy fishing. Have fun. A strike indicator is just a bobber...

FishinCricket Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I want to know your different setups for nymphing to stocked and wild trout. Preferably indicator rigs Oh, shoot... I thought the title was "Nymphos for Rainbows".... Sounds like a pretty exclusive club! cricket.c21.com
