jah Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I was lucky enough to fish the Current twice during my spring break. That was not expected seeing as how we have a 5 week old baby girl. My wife knew I needed to get out, so I took advantage of her generosity. It was the day after the massive cold front, and I had been virtually skunked 5 days before at Baptist Camp. I caught 2 stockers in the high water 5 days earlier. The water was still up, but had dropped considerably. My goal today was two-fold. Immediately get into fish and make the drive worthwhile. Then, after catching a few, target big browns. I succeeded with goal number 1, but failed with goal number 2. I used an olive wooly and an egg dropper and immediately got into fish at the access hole at Baptist. They struck hard, and I caught equal numbers on both flies. The fish that hit the wooly slammed it, and I used it only because so many of you offered me tips on my last post...so thanks. I brought about 20 or so to hand in about 4 hours, and I missed about 10-15 more. This was remakably different from my previous trip. When I was targeting browns, I tied on big streamers and dropped a Don's crawdad off the bottom. The rainbows slammed the crawdad, but I could not get any browns to hit. I was purely "chucking and ducking" for the brownies, but to no avail. Anyone know what kind of fish this is in my picture below (the one with the egg in its mouth).
Gavin Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Congrats on the baby girl! and thanks for the report...The fish in your picture looks like a striped shiner...
mic Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Sounds like you caught a real keeper...and I'm not talking about the fish. Thanks for the report
laker67 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Congrats on the baby girl and thanks for the report. Gavin is correct, it's a striped shiner and they can grow to about 10 inches. They are related to carp.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Congrats on the baby girl man! I have 2 myself...my oldest is 2 years old and my baby is 6 months old, being a dad is amazing. My oldest is already showing interest in fly fishing, well, at least the casting part! Nice report. U didnt happen to see any Caddis coming off did ya? Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...

As most of you know there's nothing like being a dad. Craig and Tom at Hargroves have a pink flyrod that I'll be buying in the near future---actually I'll be buying two. One for my wife, who loves fly-fishing, and one for my 3 1/2 year old who loves to go up to Hargroves with me. She saw the rod case and begged me to buy it-- Back to the fishing report----no caddis that I saw. I saw tons of midge clusters (at least I think they were midge clusters---I'm not that great with insects yet). Not one single fish rose the entire day I was there---except to take a peek at my pink thingamabobber.

ozark trout fisher Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Thanks for the report. I enjoyed the pics. The picture of the minnow reminded me of a funny story.I was nymphing in a run a little ways below Baptist Camp, and I saw my indicator pause in the current a little. I set the hook, and there was just a slight resistance, and I knew I was just into a chub or a shiner of something like that. I was just stripping him in to slip him off the hook when the resistance got a lot heavier. A 15" brown had taken the minnow while I was bringing it in! Does that count as live bait fishing??? I don't know-it was certainly not intentional. I was kind of relieved when the brown got off before I brought him to net.

[/quote Thats interesting last time i was down on the upper current i was nymphing big hares ears.. for some reason catch a good amount of browns on this set up. I hooked a nice 15 to 16 inch brown but the crazy part was he still had a sculpin lodged in his throat. I will have to post some pics. would any of you consider sculpin patterns the best way to take browns on the current. I allways see lots of them down there. release fish, preserve the outdoors
