duckydoty Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Got the chance to fish Crane for a little while today. The Creek is up just a little, the flow is good and the water has just a little green color to it...perfect for fishing. Fished the lower Wire Rd. access and started with the depth charges. Found out real quick that I needed to run three of them to get through the current and on the bottom. Did not take long to pick up my first fish of about 12 inches. Tied into and put to hand 2 real nice ones today over 16 inches. Fished every run and riffle down to where the water gets slow with the heavy nymphs, then worked my way back up with dry flies. Fish were slurping the surface everywhere, but I had a hard time matching what they wanted. Started with a tan caddis and only picked up on fish on that. Switched to grey and nothing. Went through a couple of different sized BWO's and only picked up a small fish or two on that then put on the small stuff. Size 30 spent wing midges caught fish. Had a lot of fun and ran into Raymond out there. I kind of like to think of him as the "Keeper of Crane Creek". We had some nice conversation and I definitely lost track of time. Wanted to be on the road back home by 3:30 and that did not happen till well after 4. Water is in great shape, good fish are everywhere, and they are biting well. Did not feel as though I had to put the super sneak on them today, just the sneaky sneak. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
laker67 Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Size 30? I couldn't even see one that small in the fly box. Thanks for a fishing report Duane. Fishing reports are starting to make a come back on this forum.
Buzz Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Great report. Thanks If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
Andrew324 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Wow! Looks looks like you had a good day out there! I have been enjoying the shape of the creek lately. Those are magnificent fish. Ray is a great guy! One time he left a whole paper towel full of flies for me after a long day of fishing the creek. Every one of those flies has produced numerous fish since then, and I haven't ran into him again to thank him. I like having those stream side chats with him just as much as fishing there. His dogs Rusty and Jake are funny too! Andrew Nelson Outdoor Adventures Graduate Assistant Campus Recreation Missouri State University

drew03cmc Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I wish I lived close enough to fish that creek more often, but I will be bucking brush and snakes this summer a time or two I hope. Andy
ozark trout fisher Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Awesome report and pictures.Anybody that uses a #30 fly is crazy! But I mean that in a good kind of way.I am not even capable of tying on a fly smaller than about #24...and I'm not capable of catching a fish on one smaller than a #22. 8x tippet I guess?

drew03cmc Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I would have to use 8x to get it through the eye of the hook, but I know I couldn't see the hook, much less follow the fly on the water. Andy
