Farm Ponds And Fly Rods

I'm going to take the fly rod out for the first time on a farm pond. I wanted to work on my casting. Anyone got any good flies and/or techniques?

The one time I went I tore it up with a white chamois worm suspended under an EHC and then a double trico rig after some tiny bugs started coming off of the water. I had a few strikes on small poppers as well. If bass are present in the pond I would try some Clouser minnows or other streamers, I only caught one sunfish on a Clouser, but it was the big'un of the day.

The nice thing about warmwater pond fishing is, more often than not, you're just trying to imitate something alive, as opposed to a particular insect or food item as you would in trout fishing. And you can make it as simple or as complicated as you'd like.

And if you want to get fancy:

Dahlberg Diver

Bass Bug

Frog

Dragonfly

Underwater you're still trying to imitate a few broad categories- insect larvae (mostly damselflies and dragonflies), minnows, and crayfish. Rubber-legged nymphs (hare's ear, fox squirrel nymph), clouser minnows, and a few generic crayfish imitations should put you in business.

And as an aside- if you have any interest in fly tying, warmwater is a great place to start. It's much more free-form than most trout bugs, and the fish are generally more forgiving

My friend Jake caught this bass along with several others and some crappie in a farm pond a couple of days ago.

As you can see it was on a rod and reel but I think that using a sculpin bounced across the bottom will produce some great action. Jake said that the fish were slulping lots of insects off the top also.

Thanks for all the inputs. I tried a little bit of everything. In the end I caught a dozen plus crappie and a couple of blue gills on a simple minnow fly made out of micro-flash tied in at the head of the hook and folded over on itself with some silver tinsel and a single line of red tinsel down the middle. I would cast it out and pop it back a couple times then cast it out again. I caught fish right up until I lost the fly. Guess I'll have to make some more.

One thing I've learned is to not tie one fly of a certain pattern. Always have several in case you lose that one fly that is producing.

Your right about that. I made this one at the end of a run while waiting for my daughter at gymnastics. Only had time to tie one before it was time to go.
