Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 16, 2011 Root Admin Posted April 16, 2011 I had a big sale yesterday in the shop. Almost $300 in feathers. They bought several $35-$40 rooster saddle necks that have been on the rack for years along with a bunch other necks and saddles. And it wasn't to a fly tyer... it was to a hair salon owner. She didn't bat an eye on the price of the necks, nor the final tab. Asked if there were any other fly shops in town - they were from Springfield. This isn't the first sale to a hair salon... I don't think I can replace what they bought either. Wapsi is out of most necks, especially the grizzly colors. This new fad is hurting supply and driving the price up on feather materials.
FishinCricket Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 Yeah, Charlie Reading went on a significant rant about it the last time I was in... Like anything though, it'll pass and birds will still grow necks... cricket.c21.com

Like anything though, it'll pass and birds will still grow necks... I think I heard that same rant in there last Sunday. He is a very passionate man. He really enjoys the sport and has a lot of insight on various aspects. Kyle
troutfiend1985 Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 I know that I've seen the prices of hackle go up, been looking to get a brown neck and a grizzly neck. I hope this passes soon and doesn't linger much longer. The thing that gets me is that these women look stupid with feathers in their hair(I guess no ones told them that that though). “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Brandeis
jdmidwest Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 Its the law of supply and demand, the fashionista's will pay more than a frugal flytyer. But when the fad passes, think of all of those nice hackles in the yard sales and flea markets for next to nothing..... Brian K. Shaffer Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 What ?? The girls are using 1st quality hackle to tie it into their hair ?? That is absurd. I have a new necks left.. I am hanging onto them. Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
flytyer57 Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 What ?? The girls are using 1st quality hackle to tie it into their hair ?? That is absurd. I have a new necks left.. I am hanging onto them. I walked into Blue Ribbon Fly Shop here in Mt. Home lask week and they had few if any necks/saddles left. I was also shocked to see the price on the Whiting 100 packs at over $22!! Last time I bought one was a couple years ago and they were only about $11. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

I showed up to a family reunion this weekend in Branson, and my 15 year old niece was there with a beautiful grizzly and red hackle feather in her hair. Believe it.

mic Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 Didja offer to sell her some hackles for $25 a piece? LOL... No, but I should have. The sad part is it did look kind of cool, and I can see why it is a fad. Hope it passes soon.
