Poison Ivy tips?

Thanks for all the good input everybody! My mom had some of the Fels-Naptha (sp?) soap which I tried as soon as I got home and I haven't had any breakouts yet (knock on wood). Last time I was out at this pond was 2 nights ago so I think (hope) I dodged the bullet.

After reading some more info about the plants, I'm not sure if I would try making the pills that gonefishin reccomended. I'm sure the gelatin protects you from the oils, but if the oils get into you respiratory system or even parts of your digestive system it could cause serious problems or even death.

I guess I'l just keep fishing and scrubbing with the Fels-Naptha when I get home. Afterall, we caught 6 decent largemouths in about a hour and we had the whole place to ourseles so it's worth it!

Sorry for the mixup. I wasn't reccomending that you ingest poison Ivy. I was just relaying what a Dr had told me. LIke you I am leary of the procedure. That is why my son hasnt done it as advised. Again sorry I should have been more specific.

Avoiding the stuff is the best bet, but if you get exposed youve got to remove oil quickly before its too late. Someone once told me that rubbing the exposed area with a liberal amount of dirt helps absorb the oil and lessens the reaction. Not sure how well it works, but the only thing that really works on the rash is time, or prednisone. Cheers.

There is a liquid soap called tecneu that is sold in pharmacies that is excellent, even after you have the rash. I wash with it every time that I think that i may have been exposed, it is much more effective if you use it sooner than later.

I would highly recommend it.

Our family uses Zanfel, it is sold at Wal-mart. It is very expensive, but it works. Very easy to apply, and it kills the itch. Normally takes about 1 week to dry up and go away. The last time we purchased Zanfel, we bought it off of E-bay, much cheaper their.

If you want to save the grass around the pond you might want to concider 2,4,D or better yet if you can find it 2,4,DP

It won't kill the grass but you would probably have to spray more than once to kill the Poison Ivy root system.

Roundup will kill poison ivy DEAD. Even 3 acres of it, 3ft tall like it was all planted there. Seeing is believing.

You are right. Roundup will kill it. No doubt about that at all. Roundup is non-discriminate, it will kill almost all vegetation. I was just thinking with it being around a pond he might want to save the grass. 2,4,D will kill the broad leave plants and leave the grass. If a person really wants to kill it out; get some Ground Clear. Then re-seed with grass later.
