While they are at it they ought to start just dumping raw sewage into Taney. That little river/lake is going to get loved to death over the next ten years.

I doubt the next 10 years will do anymore than the last. With the population of people and chickens expanding in NW Arakansas, and the big increases in Springfield, Nixa, Ozark and Table Rock developments, Branson and Rockaway will be a small drop in a big bucket.

i don't mind casinoes really i've won and lost money in vixburg, miss but maybe they should start with a large bingo hall and see where that goes kinda wading in instead of going head first. My fiances hole family plays bingo and lives in branson, they travel up to 90 miles to play sometimes.

Fight the good fight.

I agree with troutchaser, there has to be a better option out there. I don't mind the people in Rockaway getting a break but on the other hand I don't want to see commerical construction get completly out of hand on Taney.

I would rather be fishin'.

St. Charles is but one example of how a city can benefit from a casino without all the scare-tactic negative impacts the anti-gambling crowd uses to try and keep it out. I also have lived in St. Charles for a total of about 5 years since the casinos first came there. Alton, IL, right across the Miss River from there, has also actually gotten BETTER since the casino came to town.

I especially love the "prostitution" scare. These are two separate issues. You can legalize gambling and still control prostitution. The fact is, prostitution is LEGAL in Nevada...where most of the negative stats come from. If we want to discuss the legalization of prostitution, then let's discuss that. But the notion that gambling = prostitution is just dumb, dishonest, and worn out.

As for "the bad elements," Newsflash: ask any law enforcement officer in Taney County that knows you well enough to be candid with you. They will likely tell you that crime rates have been exploding in Branson/Taney County over the past couple of years. Property crimes and domestic violence mostly...with auto burglaries/vandalism/theft leading the way. Even our game wardens are spending over 1/2 of their time nowadays backing up traditional law enforcement activities because our municipal and county agencies are overwhelmed. And we don't have gambling. So is it Titanic, AB Theater, Home Depot, Branson Landing, and Target that have brought the crime? Maybe it's all Bass Pro Shops' and Victoria's Secret's fault. ;) Or maybe...just maybe: more jobs = more population = more crime. Bottom line is though we're already getting the crime spike, we might as well get the jobs w/benefits, yearround economic activity, and revenues that are supposed to come with it! :P

SilverMallard, I just want to make sure your idea is clear to everyone. Your message seems to convey the idea that Rockaway Beach has a high crime rate already, so there would be no harm in a floating casino.

One point I would like to address from your message: If the current law enforcement system is already overwhelmed, what would be the effect of a casino on this already stressed infrastructure?

Possibly the revenue to expand it?

I'm probably more liberal on social matters than alot of folks on this board, but I was dead-set against this on the first go-round because of the presentation the casino group was giving at the time.

There was very little consideration given to the impact of the county's obligations. Law enforcement, road improvements, and the county jail would all be impacted, but it seemed the bulk of the revenues generated would stay in Rockaway proper.

I would have to agree with Wayne. When casinos came to Tunica, the taxes collected provided more law enforcement jobs, equipment, administrative personnel, and large city and county law enforcement buildings. I have mixed reactions and eelings as to what gambling does or does not do for a community. On the positive side there is a great economic impact and on the down a severe social impact....Dano

I'd have to agree with Silver Mallard. St. Charles, Alton, IL & East St. Louis have improved since the casino's went in. They do a lot of advertising, but if your not into casino gambling you hardly notice they are there.

Travel Channel Poker has helped gambling improve its image a lot since the Rockaway Casino got voted down a few years ago. I have a feeling that a casino amendment would pass if they put it on the ballot again. Cheers.
