jdmidwest Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 A week ago Tue., a tornado passed thru the farm. It tore up trees, ripped the roof off several sheds, and the roof on the house. The sad thing was, it tore down the catalpa tree that was planted by my great, great grandfather. He was the first generation to own the farm, I am number 5. I arrived on the scene Friday, we were still out of power. It was restored temporarily on Sat. The flooding arrived Sat. night, it put 3 large trees on the bridge trapping me in. Monday night storms dumped several more trees on the bridge and and knocked power out as the storm took out power lines 1/2 mile north of us. I was finally able to get out Tuesday late. Floods again on Wed. closed the bridge again. This is the little creek that is barely worth wading, ankle deep at most crossings. And, this is not even close to the major flooding we have had in the past. It even flushed out an otter. What a freakin week, I will be glad when this weather slows back down to normal. duckydoty Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Sorry to learn of all the damage you encountered. That tree must have been impressive. I'm glad you and your family were not injured. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
OzarksRiverman Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 You should salvage some of that tree and make something out of it--a table, or a shelf, etc... You can keep it as a family heirloom.

Danoinark Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Those old Catalpa's are pretty hardy JD. You might be lucky that some shoots will spring from it. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
jdmidwest Posted May 2, 2011 Author Posted May 2, 2011 Thanks all. There are several other offshoots of the main tree scattered around the farm and one in my yard at my house. Funny you should mention the boat thing, Dad and I discussed that the second day of the flooding... We plan to salvage what we can, but the interior was hollow. What we had pales to what others have suffered, we know how lucky we are and have counted our blessings. Massive flooding in SE MO. Massive deaths in Al. Possible breach of a levee system in New Madrid. And, after catching up on here, flooding in Taney. jdmidwest Posted May 2, 2011 Author Posted May 2, 2011 Dugout canoes were made from hollowed out trees. Maybe ya can salvage it. It was pretty twisted and busted up. Might be able to build a whitewater yak out of it. Thinking about cutting the stump off level and preserving it some way. Here is another pic from a different angle. All of the trees around it have come up from the main one and are all catalpa's. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
flytyer57 Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Well, at least it didn't fall on the house. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
