mic Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 If you have tied a Montana Stone Fly before, can you please go to the "Bsc Fishing Report 5-8-11" thread on wild creeks forum and explain how to wind ostrich herl and hackle together. Thanks In Advance.
sean c Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Mic I have never wrapped hackle and herl together. Any time I wrap a hackle to imitate legs on a stonefly pattern I am just going to cover it with a wingcase(pheasant, turkey or chenille). I would find a recipe for a Pat's rubber legs and try that first. Brian Wise has a nice tutorial on this site for the pattern. You can really make them any size or color. FWIW I always thought Montana stone was a black and yellow chenille pattern.
Wayne SW/MO Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 FWIW I always thought Montana stone was a black and yellow chenille pattern. Hmmm. Me too. I always thought the Montana stone had the lower thorax in yellow chenille and the Bitch Creek had the lower tail section in yellow chenille. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
eric1978 Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Stoneflies are easy to improvise...here's one I settled on last year. Easy to tie, but more realistic than a basic Rubberlegs. It's pretty much a variant of the Northfork Stone.
Brian Wise Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 NICE Eric! That thing won't EVER make it to the bottom will it? You may be able to spin it Mic. Ostrich Herl and Hackle spun makes a very, very cool effect (as long as your hackle is long enough) and it makes it a lot stronger. But I'm with the guys, I don't remember Ostrich Herl being in the "true" Montana Stone..but lets face it, there are TONS of spin-offs of every original pattern out there. My Youtube Channel
Gavin Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 This is a good one for goldens...slays everywhere.. Whit's Rubber Leg Red Fox Squirrel Nymph.. http://www.flyofthemonthclub.com/store/catalog.asp?item=652 The only stone pattern I recall with Ostrich in the thorax is the Brook's Stone.is easy tie and effective. http://stevenojai.tripod.com/goldstone.htm http://books.google.com/books?id=8sGVmsNIJsEC&pg=PA263&lpg=PA263&dq=Charlie+Brooks+Stonefly&source=bl&ots=FR0p3wTw0V&sig=LQQMKjp-9yoE2jLYiT11iJFovGg&hl=en&ei=Pe3LTfHYF-Hf0QGqgN3rBg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8&ved=0CEMQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=Charlie%20Brooks%20Stonefly&f=false
eric1978 Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 NICE Eric! That thing won't EVER make it to the bottom will it? Not in your river...I'd need three of 'em and an egg sinker to get down in that torrent.
mic Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 Here is my try at my own recipe. This one is about the six or seventh try. Not bad for rookie. I don't like the tail and antenna. I tried biot but didn't like it. I think feather craft has colored pheasant tail. If they have yellow, I'm going to give that a try. Please feel free to make suggestions.
eric1978 Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 The thorax looks pretty wicked, mic. I'd try the biots again...they give the best look for stonefly tails, IMO. I'd prolly trim the dubbing down a little, too. A trout would eat that, I reckon.
