ColdWaterFshr Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 Aw, Ness, that was just Paul Dallas storytellin. ColdWater went through the BSA in fine fashion. Had a very good troop and a couple scoutmasters that ran it old school with no nonsense, including an old indian named Bud McElvey. He was the real deal. We were a small troop but very active and did lots of great campouts and adventures that are among some of my very best memories. Minimalist hikes deep into Hercules Glades Wilderness Area, float trips, trips to Ft. Wood, Camp Arrowhead, all kinds of adventures. We had a nice fleet of aluminum canoes that got stolen from our church garage and it was about that time that the BSA got weird about troops having their own canoes due to liability reasons, so they were never replaced. In the 6 years or so that I was in Scouts, our troop graduated something like 9 or 10 Eagle Scouts and this was a troop that never had more than 9 or 10 boys at any one time. Pretty good #'s I reckon. We got into some mischief from time to time, but for the most part we walked the straight and narrow. That story about the stringer in the pine tree might be partially true though. TJM - sounds like you have a well-organized troop and you should be proud. Those pictures look great and I am sure you are doing a great job with the boys.
Gavin Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 Thats a great vid of the kids having fun on the river. Looks like you run a tight ship with room for some impromptu fun...Life Jackets on...tents & gear squared away round camp & in the boats... food in belly's and enough to go around.....Hope you have a great trip!
Members TJM1455 Posted May 24, 2011 Author Members Posted May 24, 2011 We had our last bit of training last night other than swim tests. A scout asks me, "can I bring a machete?" I quickly thought about A. Agnew's post. I asked "for what?" and he said, "to cut fire wood" My co-leader said, "you can bring one as long as it is BSA approved. And as there are no BSA approved machetes, no you can't bring one" Our Troop Scout Master is a savant at identfying banned objects. At summer camp the Game Boys and the like stay in the cars. He can spot make and model under a sweatshirt from 100 feet.
Gavin Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 A machete wouldnt do any good anyway....the river gets floated allot and the firewood selection is pitiful....if BSA approves chainsaws...bring one to cut dead fall...if not bring 2-3 decent buck saws...they rock for small fires.. http://www.bensbackwoods.com/servlet/Detail?no=413
