Al Agnew Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Excellent info, Skeeter...if you want to read some really interesting stuff about the Old River Control Structure and how the Mississippi wants to shorten and steepen its channel by going down the Atchafalaya, find a copy of John McPhee's book, "The Control of Nature". Like you said, there just aren't any good answers. As long as we try to control the Mississippi rather than living with it, there will always be periodic disasters.
ColdWaterFshr Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I'm halfway through "Riverhorse" by William Least-Heat Moon, a book about his travels from New York across America in a small C-dory by way of the major rivers (Ohio, Mississippi, Missouri, among others). Very good reading and lots of historical perspectives and quotes concerning floods, the COE, levee building, and also a lot of insight into the people who live along the rivers.
