Mitch f Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 What about the Abu low profile reels? Would those be recommended? Drew, I've never used one of their low profile reels so I can't answer that. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
eric1978 Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Drew, go with the Citica or Curado. They unequivocally have the best cost to quality ratio. Rods are more subjective, but you can't go wrong with those two reels.
RSBreth Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 I only have two questions: 5'6" - why so short? Most folks consider 6'6" about the "standard". I like 7' for a lot of stuff, and would consider either "all around". The second - What are you going to do with this setup? "Everything?" Just spinnerbaits? Jigs? Your answers would have an impact on my opinion.

The short rod would be used primarily on smaller streams. I might consider a 6' rod, but that would be about my max. That, and I like shorter rods as a rule. Everything would be about the best way to describe my uses for this rod. I will throw cranks, spinnerbaits, soft plastics, topwater, etc. Eventually, I will graduate to having multiple casting rigs setup at once, but for now, it would just be the one. Eric, why are those two reels so highly regarded? Edited: Cabela's offers the Citica in a combo with their Fish Eagle II for $170 or so. That, IMO, is a hell of a price. I might go that route then. Now, would 6' make for an alright all-round rod for all across the Ozarks as well as some lake stuff from a boat in your opinions? Andy

drew03cmc Posted June 4, 2011 Author Posted June 4, 2011 I have looked at the Citica, and I like what I see. I will let you all know what I come up with! Thanks again everybody! Andy
RSBreth Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 I'd go longer if I were you - especially for an "all around" rod - but hey - you can get more specialty setups after getting the casting groove down. A 6' medium power rod with a good reel is a good river spinnerbait setup. Reels - a lot of people love Shimano and with good reason - but I've had two Curado's blow up on me - I'm hard on stuff. I've had cheap reels last and expensive ones break teeth on their gears. So I'm not really brand loyal as some others. Whatever you get realize it's just a mechanical object - it may break. Replacements aren't too expensive. Like others have stated - ebay is a good place to browse, as is craigslist.

All of my river rods are 6 footers. No single rod can do it all, but if I could only have one, I'd get a medium power fast action for stream fishing. Eric, why are those two reels so highly regarded? They're quality reels that don't break the bank, plain and simple. There's a little trouble with some of Shimano's spinning reels, but their mid-line baitcasters are affordable workhorses, and have been for years. I never do any maintenance on mine and they just keep going and going like they were new. Good brake systems, smooth drags, lightweight and comfortable. Can't comment on the Cabela's rods because I've never used one, but from what I've seen they're mediocre at best. About 90% of that $170 is going toward the reel in that combo deal. I got a Citica for $90 on ebay...no tax, free shipping. So unless you think that Cabela's rod is worth $80 plus tax, you could do better. Just my opinion. I'm sure lots of guys love the Cab's rods...I don't.
drew03cmc Posted June 4, 2011 Author Posted June 4, 2011 Thanks Eric. I appreciate the candor. I might keep looking for a rod then and monitor eBay for the Citica. Andy
