Members lovetofish Posted June 5, 2011 Members Posted June 5, 2011 What is your favorite shop in the area and why??? Which one do you not like and why??? Do you like Larry's, Weaver, The Park Store ran by Rogers or others. Tell me what you think about the stores and the way they are ran. I am interested in the details.

brittsnbirds Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Depending on where I am and what I need. If I'm fishing and up by Zone 1 I go to Larry's. (Plus if Larry is there he love's to talk Pheasant hunting and loves to see my little/big britt Dixie). Larry's son is very helpful as is everyone else. Have him tie you up some of his "special" mini egg units. One of his helpers (volunteer firefighter) tied one for me one day. It's great for sight (gut) fishing. If I need propane and need something I go to Weavers. But it isn't the same without the old crew!! If I need something special and want to spend a lot of money I go to Charlie's. Plus it makes me feel like I'm at work with his sarcasm. I have a friend that refuses to go back after spending 10 minutes there. I stop at the park store to visit the girls and Eric. Always have to visit Skip to get my card in the morning!! If he isn't busy he will give up a few ideas. I use to go to Gaston's every once in a while (before they closed) if I needed a little second hand smoke. Plus Mrs. Gaston turned me on to her favorite emerger pattern. It's more of a need and convenience thing. I tie my own flies and have found that I have to do some running around sometimes to get just what I want. Overall they all have what you need for basic fishing at the BSSP. Prices aren't too different. Their enthusiasm to help is usually very good.
Wayne SW/MO Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Not what you want to hear, but it's the one that has what you want at an acceptable price. It can also be said that the shops in the area cater to different markets for the most part. The exception might be the park store, but it has a different mandate being partnered with the state. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Greg Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 I use the park store the most for convenience. But I like Larry's the best by far. "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
ruthead Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 We kinda splitt between Larry's and Readings. The convenience of Larrys is nice and I don't mind paying a little for that. Larry's son Kelley has taken real good care of of us on more than one occasion. I also feel that the knowledge of Charlie Reading is well worth the 3 eor 4 extra minutes drive. I didn't care for him the first time I went in there and didn't go back for a couple years but finally did. Once we got to know him a little better we really like going in there. He's helped me and my boys with tying and casting( I'm still not very good but my boys do pretty good). Actually I look at it as saving money at Charlie's as the advise saves me from buying things that don't work n or give the results we're looking for. We also stop in at Weaver's some when we really don't need higher end products and like the friendliness. "Pretty soon we may not have any rights left because it might infringe on someone's rights"
FishinCricket Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Plus Mrs. Gaston turned me on to her favorite emerger pattern. I see... Is that some kinda code? cricket.c21.com
fishinwrench Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Just guessing, but I think the underlying question that Lovetofish is asking is.... What can Weavers new owners do to increase their sales? And my opinion is they just don't have the space. or the knowledge to cater to bait fishermen, spin fishermen, AND Fly fishermen. Weavers has always been more of a bait chucker/Roostertail/jig shop.....are they wanting to compete in the flyfishing game now?

Weavers has always been more of a bait chucker/Roostertail/jig shop.....are they wanting to compete in the flyfishing game now? No doubt about that. They survived on prices and passing on good knowledge from the crowd Wrench is talking about. You also have to remember that a large number of the crowd is either no longer with us or not fishing. Jerry and Brenda made a good transition from the Weavers, but their in- crowd had been around a long time. It was the only place to buy Marabou jigs that were well tied and cheap. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
fishinwrench Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 I see... Is that some kinda code? Yeah , but I can translate for ya.... its San Juan'ian, meaning. "Little fluff of duck butt fished with heavy tippet". (at least it had BETTER BE!)
