Nortrad Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Here's the new batch. Researching found that many tiers/fishers swear by the orange/black underside. Found a pattern on a site that used orange exclusively for the bottom. I striped some of these with a Sharpie. Bottom piece is the thick foam door hangers from Michael's, great colors for hoppers/beetles for later. I used golden brown deer hair, root beer krystal flash or combo for wings. No eyes, stayed with the orange indicator on top. There's also a pattern with thin skin for wings. I like the Gamakatsu stinger, #6. Fishin' bud the Jedi told me, "Dude, you're obsessing about the cicadas." Yes, yes I am. The possibility of a 20" brown or big bow slamming one of these...and, you can always drop a nymph or midge off the back.

Nortrad Posted June 11, 2011 Author Posted June 11, 2011 There is no such thing as excess obsession when it comes to getting a lure right. I hear that. Already have some hoppers ready for upcoming trips.
Ham Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 There is no such thing as excess obsession when it comes to getting a lure right. Those are some GREAT looking Cicadas. Tell your friend to piss off if he asks to use one. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Wayne SW/MO Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Those look great, but around my house you're in for a 13 year wait. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Ham Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 The cycle is definitely waning at my place as well BUT I'd bet that fly works every year to som edegree. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Nortrad Posted June 11, 2011 Author Posted June 11, 2011 Thanks guys, it's slowing down to be sure. I'll see how they attract tomorrow, dropping a nymph off the back for sure.
Nortrad Posted June 13, 2011 Author Posted June 13, 2011 The ones with the thicker orange foam bottom worked the best, landed two and lost one on top, decent 'bows, not huge. Still tweaking. Like Stlfisher reported, they're still around, the cooler temp's with a little rain slowed down the activity. Didn't see any on the water, they'd be in the woods on the trail when you'd move between holes on the Current.
Gavin Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Those look great...I'm sure they will slay.... Made an observation this weekend.....Not many cicada's in my neighborhood so pickings or slim...but about half a dozen landed in the pool yesterday.......Every one has been floating on its side...will see if the trend continues.
Nortrad Posted June 13, 2011 Author Posted June 13, 2011 Thanks Gavin. It's been fun trying to come up with something. Had some more ideas since this batch, we shall see. Hopefully these will transition nicely into hopper/dropper fishing.
