Salmo trutta is the only species of trout native to the United Kingdom, where we also have one native species of grayling (Thymalus thymalus). If my memory serves me right, Salmo trutta is the one and only BROWN TROUT!!!! OH MY GOSH!!! Brown trout are also NATIVE to the UK and EUROPE environment-agency.gov.uk/commondata/.../onftroutgrayling_766460.pdf Its amazing what one search on UK Native fish can show you There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
gonefishin Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Actually GF, the Carp were stocked around the middle of the 1800's as a rapidly growing food source. I think you have to remember that all there were, for the most part, were creeks and rivers and there was no fish that was abundant enough provide a good source of food in smaller waters. There was no concern for "sport" fish, only easy to catch food fish. At about the same time they were killing, and eating, every deer, elk, and turkey they could kill. Thats what they say but it is certainly hard to believe that channel cat with their extremely high food to weight conversion ratio would not have been an exceptionally good if not better food source. Getting fish across the ocean back in those days had to be quiet an expensive and lengthy undertaking. In this country we don't and never have done something like that for food. However we do and always have been willing to way over pay for sport. I think if it was really researched it would be found they were introduced for sport not food. I would rather be fishin'.
