OK! This is the scoop for how this is going to have to work. First of all the MDC have to be made aware of a problem. Then this rule has to be looked at by a rules committee Then if they see a problem they make a new rule and it is sent to the Commissioners for their approval then back to the rules committee to do the final rule update. When ask how that the Brown trout could be protected in the Blue Ribbon area and not inside the park they are going to tell you that the DMC manages the Blue Ribbon area for Brown trout and they do not manage the trout parks for brown trout. Even though the brown trout come from the Blue Ribbon (protected area) into a unprotected area of flying jigs, live bait, dough bait and basically a slaughterhouse for fish above 15".

The first step is to contact the Chief Of Fisheries Chris Vitello and tell him your thoughts on this rule he can be reached at Chris Vitello ( The More The Better. I understand from this thread they have already had some calls. the phone # is 573-522-4115. We can get this changed if everyone that hates to see a great resource being ripped from out mitts because of a loophole in a rule will let them know. A 18" 1 Brown Trout State Wide would be a start.

Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.

I'm not a Missourian, but I do fish up there quite a bit and Arkansas has the same problems for the most part. I still can't stand the idea of snagging browns- which I have seen all over the place. I even tipped off a passing MDC agent at taney during the brown trout spawn that all those old dudes around the hatchery pipes were all snagging- albeit with legal flies and fly rods- but they were still snagging and obviously killing huge beautiful brown trout. I think the only way to help with this is for responsible anglers to confront the snagger and let them know that nobody is impressed that they caught a 28 inch brown- under a hatchery pipe- during the spawn- by sticking a hook in its belly- and after trying to snag the same fish for about 30 minutes. My dad and I watched a dude at the Little Red during the spawn at Cow Shoals deliberately snagging brown after brown in a little bottle neck riffle. My dad asked him what he was using to catch so many fish and he replied "oh Im just snagging them." We would have yelled at him but he happened to be about 6'4 280... gotta choose your battles. Next time, maybe I'll yell something insulting from the parking lot and call the AGFC...

I just heard that the Shop Owner at Reed's Fly shop got a butt chewing from a friend of the angler in question here for the three fish. He demanded to know why the shop was saying all the bad things about the guy. But as I look back through the thread I see no bad things said about anyone here. This must be hitting a nerve of some people. The Fly shop simply took the photo and Posted it without comment on their Facebook page I took the photo and made the post here under What do You Think. I even blackened the anglers face LMAO!!!! I know for a fact that the Fly Shop does not get involved in the politics of how anglers catch the fish, just takes the photos for them and post them. Then it is public domain.

Someone feels the heat.

I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted.

It's hard to tell what's going on with the limited information, but it does raise a few eyebrows. I agree with a lot of guys on here that brown trout need a lower possession limit, say one per day and total possession limit of two.

Very little chance of catching those fish legally in a day.

Even less of a chance of regularly catching lunkers.

I've fished white jigs a lot in the past, and they work, but it's not a magical jig that inspires lunkers to strike constantly.

A very interesting discussion here. I will make no opinion on the angler in question for the fact that I do not know him personally. But in regard to 3wt's comment, I will respond. I know several anglers who have the skills and the patience to do what you have described on a regular basis. Several are members in good standing on oaf. Multiple lunker catches, in a days fishing, is what they do best. They are not fish killers. 99 out of 100 will be released to be caught again. Occasionally they will keep a fish that tops their personal best. Catching a limit, or more, of lunker trout in one day of fishing happens alot more than you are aware of.

Per MDC today in response to an email I sent them.

It is 1 Brown at 15" long in the trout parks.

You can find detailed information in the Wildlife Code trout section (10-6.535) here: http://sos.mo.gov/adrules/csr/current/3csr/3c10-6.pdf

Or on page 18 of our Fishing Regulations Summary here: http://mdc.mo.gov/sites/default/files/resources/2011/01/2011fishsummary.pdf

I hope this helps,

And then the second email to add to the confusion.

Upon further review we determined brown trout follow the same daily limits as rainbows in the trout parks. That would be 4, but the length limit is 15"
