Flysmallie Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 If you guys start this crap around the campfire in September I might kill all of you. Can't you just agree to disagree and shut the hell up. You are never gonna change each other's mind.
drew03cmc Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Oh, please. You're gonna sit there with a straight face and say the Native Americans harvested as many fish from MO rivers as we currently do now? That's silliness. But fine, in that case, who regulated the fisheries and kept the populations in check before the Native Americans crossed the Bering Strait? The smallmouth have been here for tens of thousands of years...they don't need us to do anything but put them back after we catch them. The "overpopulation" (which is a figment of your imagination) is regulated enough by pollution and habitat degradation. Any more "help" from humans only makes things worse. No one is saying they're being decimated, only that the fishing could be better with different regs. Better. Come down here and prove habitat degradation to me. You can't. This is pristine smallmouth habitat and there are holes where all four of us caught ten fish from a single location and could have killed two more hours there doing the same thing. I guess that is normal. There are a few streams down here that are definitely overpopulated with small brownies. You can watch them kill your plastics and have five fish watch that one do it from inches away. If you truly believe they cannot be overpopulated, drive your happy ___ down here and fish with us one day on this creek we are thinking of. Al has said the population has been decimated by spotted bass numerous times and yet we have heard nothing of them this year. Why is it that you don't align yourself with his beliefs on this as you do everything else? Andy

Figgered it'd be fun to pick a fight with Chief and Drew, the usual suspects, over the usual topic. It's kept me busy 13 times today...now 14. LOL We'll be too busy bean wrestling in September...no worries.

Chief Grey Bear Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 The "overpopulation" (which is a figment of your imagination) is regulated enough by pollution and habitat degradation. Really??? That is bold talk from a one eyed fat man from the east! Any more "help" from humans only makes things worse. Now you are catching on! No one is saying they're being decimated, only that the fishing could be better with different regs. Better. That is all we have heard from you easterners. Fishing will not be better if you don't get rid of some of the smaller fish. Did you ever notice that all MDC lakes have a slot limit on bass. There is a reason for that. I will give you a hint. The 8" to 11" inch fish have a ferocious appetites. And that is not good for growing large bass. Even worse in unimpounded waters. eric1978 Posted July 25, 2011 Author Posted July 25, 2011 That's the first regulation I would try to get changed. Yeah Jeremy, it's a bummer. I'm not as lucky as you SWMO boys with your backyard rivers...I gotta DRIVE to go fishin'. Which means money and time, both of which my wife and one year old have a strangle hold upon. Chief, pay attention bro. I've been talking about a slot limit the whole time. Release all fish 12-18 inches. Keep 4 per day, only 1 over 18. What's your beef with that? The meat eaters can get their dinner, and the trophy hunters can take home their pig. Leave the rest for you and me and everyone else who likes to watch them swim away. Oh, and I'm a one eared fat man from the east, remember? I'm half deaf, not half blind.

You know there are places to fish in Saint Louis, you don't HAVE to drive to fish. I enjoy fishing the lakes when I can't get down to the Ozarks. Your idea to pick a fight made my day entertaining too! Andy
fishinSWMO Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 I fully understand Eric, hopefully it will get better some day. Two fellas I work with fished a creek yesterday and complained about not catching any keepers, caught 90 between them they said. I took it like they were looking for a fish fry and came up short, kept some perch and goggleye they said. Jeremy Dodson
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 I can think of numerous stretches of what were once reasonably deep holes that are now long flat bottom shallow stretches devoid of much cover. The logs and boulders have been covered by gravel. It's not consistent on every river or even parts of some rivers, but it is a trend that has been on going in my view. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
