can you spin any deer hair as for as like belly ect. or what part of the deer is the hair best used for spinning. like to try to expirment with it never have done it

You can spin most hair it depends on what pattern you tying for the size. The smaller is easier to cut through with the thread under pressure of spinning.

Usually any part of the deer except the tail will spin. Local whitetail is fair, the best comes from farther north where the deer hair has more air space and density.

1. Find and purchase a copy of Billy Munn's DVD on tying with Deer Hair. It is an amazing clear set of instructions and information from one of the best hair men ever! You will not regret this purchase.

2. Attend the Southern Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers Conclave and Fly Fair in Mountain Home Arkansas on Oct. 6-9th, http://www.southerncouncilfff.org/conclave/2011/index.php At this show you will have the opportunity to learn from a variety of marvelous deer hair tyers from across the country. (And while you're there, go ahead and join the Federation, since 1965 the FFF has been the voice of fly fishing and the glue that held the largest number of tyers/tying instructors together.)

Really good advice - if you can get some hands on instruction, do it. My deer hair spinning was fair until I learned from a master - there's a certain "touch" you have to develop.

If spinning deer hair gives you fits...Learn the Lacey Gee method....its illustrated in the Wapsi Fly Tying Manual and in Lacey Gee's book "Practical Flies and Their Construction". I've seen Tom Ziegler and Jerry Jarosik do some amazing things using that method.
