Kinda hard to understand, but it sounds like you are trying to shoot line on the backcast? You only want to be shooting on the forward stroke. Haul your line at the beginning of the backcast, and haul it again at the beginning of your forward cast, then shoot.

I think that's what you're asking?

You need to pull the line as you're making your backcast. This loads the rod more giving it enough energy to shoot the line back. You than do the same, only opposite on the forward cast. The idea of double hauling is in loading the rod more by increasing the perceived weight of the line. This loading increases line speed and energy stored in the rod.

Timing is 99.9% of it.

Depends....sounds like your cast needs some work...without seeing you cast I cant offer good advice..Online casting advice is wasted typing for the most part.

Do you mean haul line before your back cast as Eric stated or as you are in your back cast? I think I experience the same issue as the original poster. When I make my first haul the line does not get pulled through the quides as it rolls out behind me (it kinda sticks in the guides so to speak)and I am left with some slack near my hauling hand when I do the second haul.

You may want to browse YouTube and see if you can find some decent casting videos there, as some others have said, it's often tough to articulate how to double haul without any graphics present. If you're near one of the FFF and TU Chapters in the area, you may also be able to hook up with a casting instructor for some real-time demonstrations. It's a great skill to have, and definitely worth perfecting.

Yes when I first started to read this post, I didn't know what a double haul was. so youtube was the first place I went. Now I know what it is and how to cast it. Looks to me like there is alot of info a person could learn from on there.

It is all about increasing the load on the rod, so the haul has to made when the rod is loading. You increase the line speed when you are picking it up and let it go out on the back cast. This gives you line to haul on the forward cast and to shoot forward at the end of the cast. Basically it allows you to get more running line out in the cast. You can't cast running line as you normally cast because you can't turn heavy line over with light line. In other words you can turn the head over with a lot of small diameter running line.
