Micheal Kyle Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Last night was one of the greatest night fishing adventures that I have ever had on Taneycomo. We were not even going to go but at the last minute decided to go and it payed off. According to the scheldule they were going to shut the water off at 8pm and we had decided to get down and put the boat in and row up to the cable, and fish mice down the south bank trying to get a rise out of a large fish. Plans changed when they never shut the water off, Matt and I sat at the pavillion talking about flies and past and soon to be fishing trips. I decided to go down to the boat ramp to sit and listen to some tunes and wait for the water to shut down. As we pulled down to the boat ramp there were a couple of teenagers down at the end of the ramp, they jumped up and and eagerly got out of our way. They seemed a little embarssed but we stood and talked to them for a few minutes then decided to go ahead and launch the boat. As I was getting the boat ready to launch Matt scanned the water with his light and what a surprise; there was a big brown sitting just off the ramp. I told Matt turn his light off so we don't spook him I hurried up and changed flies from a mouse to a Meal Ticket. Matt asked if I had a chance, I said I wasn't sure but I was sure going to try. After about 20 min of squinting at the fish's silhuette being illuminated by the moon I felt a hard quick pull I set the hook and the fight was on. Up past the rock, back down to the boat ramp, out into the current twice then back up to the boat ramp. After 2 misses with the net and Matt being soaked we landed the fish about 30 yards down stream of the boat ramp. The most intense fish fight I have had in several years. I have been dedicating to fishing for big fish all summer using large flies like the mouse pattern and the Meal Ticket. I have no pics of the Meal Ticket but it is an articulated fly that is about 3-4 inches long, I tie mine in varius colors and the one that I used last night was actually tied by Matt in white and red with 2 1/0 hooks in it. I was working the water; swinging and stripping the fly right in front of the fish. I suspect that the fish just got mad and attaced the fly instead of actually eating it because it was hungry. I was using a 9' 7wt Sage TCX with a floating line Here are 2 pics of the fish 26.5 inches and 15.8 lbs Needless to say the boat never got put in so I guess you could say the bite was slow cause I had one hit one fish. I rather be lucky than good anyday of the week. Good luck see you this weekend. To Know People Is To Know Thier Ways!
Members Chuck Moore Posted September 8, 2011 Members Posted September 8, 2011 Can we assume the big brown is still swimming in Taneycomo???

TroutRinger Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Wow. Awesome fish! "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." "There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot."
Members Matt Madura Posted September 8, 2011 Members Posted September 8, 2011 The fish was fully revived before we left. We made sure of that. Shes still out there......
laker67 Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 WOW. WOW. WOW. I will just add my 2 cents to Micheal's story. Few people ,that I night fish with, are any more deserving than Micheal. This guy invests the time and effort that is required to catch a fish like this. He calls himself "lucky", but just spend a few nights on the river with him and then make up your own mind about the luck factor. He definately has the skills and the patience to pursue a fish of this magnitude. I fully expect to see him with another, this size or bigger, in the near future. Years ago I used to night fish with Micheal's father. His dad still ranks as one of the best night fisherman that I have ever been around. Congrats Micheal, on a fish hard earned and well deserved. You have already set the benchmark for the 2011 season.

Members TArcher Posted September 8, 2011 Members Posted September 8, 2011 Wow! What a fish! Just curious if the Meal Ticket fly recipe is available? I've never heard of the fly but might be something to have in my arsenal. "There will be days when the fishing is better than one's most optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home."
