laker67 Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 THIS! My god people. The reason everyone's an asshole nowadays is because no one takes the time to be nice first. No one communicates nowadays except by dirty looks, stray fingers or mf'ing someone. There's nothing better than making a jerk realize that they're being a jerk when you turn around and say "Careful back there. I don't want to give you an unwanted piercing. " /end rant By jerk, I mean someone who knows exactly what he is doing when he crowds you out. Not the casual by stander or once a year trout fisherman.
Idylwilde Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Any Reports on how the Derby went? Heard Mr. Hood from Licking Mo, won all the good stuff with the biggest Brown and Rainbow. He is such a great Trout angler! We need him on this forum to teach us how he does it. Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.

Don't know what the total was, but it sounds like a drastic decline in numbers from the normal derby. They used to turn out 40 and at least 39 would be caught. I would say that Mr. Hood's input on this forum would not be widely accepted by most. Personally, I would welcome his participation.
flyfishmaster Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 I have not heard of Mr. Hood prior to this posting, but would have to say I would enjoy to heard any advice or tips he may have. Congrats to all winners at the derby. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
Jeff Tief Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 wonder what the final count was at the Derby.one of my friends fished Saturday until about 4pm and said only 6 lunkers caught.Talked to a guy shopping waders at BassPro and he said his dad had big rainbow on,lost and the fish was immediately surrounded by some of the local boys. They pretty much reeled up,stuck a jig in the defenseless fishes mouth and "caught" it.Some of these lads are in the 3rd generation of fishing. It's a shame because one of the aforementioned gentleman can actually fish a jig as well as anyone on the stream.Talked one of the group into releasing a snagged fish years ago and he broke his line got a rod from a son and threw a perfect cast right into the fishes mouth. Now it is hard to say much because the jig is inside the fishes mouth.
Idylwilde Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I don't know but I have heard you can run a fish around a hole until it is exhausted and they will lay down in still water gasping for breath and it's pretty easy to get a jig in it's mouth. Or catch one and fight it almost to death then release it and while it's laying on it's side by the bank then place the jig in it's mouth and set a legal hook in it's mouth. Don't know just saying!! I am sure none of the boy's would do that. Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.

I am sure none of the boy's would do that. The snagging first, and playing a fish to exhaustion, was a pretty common tactic years ago. Jeff was referring to that in his post. They play the fish out and break it off, or release it near the bank. Then it's just a simple matter of placing your jig or fly in front of the fish and he actually sucks it in as he is gasping for air. A common tactic and highly frowned upon and used by alot of derby fishermen when money and valuable prizes are awarded. They give the "honest" sight fishermen a bad name, because most associate this kind of fishing with sight fishing. You can bet your bottom dollar that Jeff, myself, and a handful of others will be the first to say something and attempt to discourage this unsportsmanlike conduct.

Idylwilde Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 For some reason the names of Amschler, Hood & Headrick stand out to me. I must have saw the names listed in the Outdoor Life Magazine some time. I know the Lunker board at the Lodge has the names all over it. So they must be the best of the best at the park. Congratulations to them. Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.
Gavin Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Its always the same cast of characters leading those derby's...Its amazing how consistant they are.
