snagged in outlet 3
Thankyou Phil. I thought it would've been much more than that. How far in advance do you have to book? I like the idea of rainbows chasing smelt instead of egg fishing. What would be a good week to take advantage of that? Do you worry about flooding if you're too early? Moon phase? I was looking at the last full week of June? How does that week look to you? Snagged.
rainbow
Phil, neat pics of everything. I have always wanted to go on a trip like that. I will be interested in the cost. I couldn't get two weeks off in a row but one would be great. A friend went to the Kenai last year and caught huge rainbows. His trip also included salmon and halibut. He brought home a ton of fish and gave me about 20 pounds of it. It was pretty reasonable as far as cost.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 28, 2006 Author Root Admin Share Posted August 28, 2006 As far as bringing fish home, rainbow limits are very restrictive. But you can either book a side trip out of Naknek for Halibut or buy it and have it shipped for much less than getting it in the states. Only if you go later in July can you catch and keep salmon. I myself am going in June because I'm going early to help do some remodling work at the camp... then staying on for guiding a couple of weeks hopefully. But all this has to be cleared with Jim's plans. The river is very low early (June-July)and builds to it's highest level mid August. It had dropped a bit while we were there. twosets
Great photos Phil. Perhaps it is time to have seperate dedicated section of the web site for "Outside Fishing Trips", I just happened across this while looking for something else. After the Crock Hunter, I an especially glad you and Bill did not end up as bear dung. George "This is not Nam. This is bowling. There are rules." Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted September 13, 2006 Author Root Admin Share Posted September 13, 2006 Jim told us... "there are no confirmed reports of a bear attack/fatality with a group of people with 3 or more in it"... or something like that. So we felt "safe" in numbers. Of course that wasn't the case when Jim and Bill went around the bend and left the rest of us on Margot Creek. Jim came across a mom and cub... the cub fell in the fast water and let out a yell... mom came running and all of it was heading right towards Jim- fast. Jim, I guess, RAN downstream to avoid any misunderstandings. I'd like to see that (Jim running).
Members live2fish
Here's a recipe for Alaska fishing that works well for my wife & me: 1) Go (in the summer, any time that you can, but early September can be fantastic). 2) Fly into Anchorage and pick up a motorhome (reserve ahead). 3) Then drive to a big Anchorage fly shop, explain your situation (flexible plans) and ask them where to fish, what to use and how to use it. 4) Follow their advice; go & fish according to their directions and (8.5 times out of 10) enjoy the trip(s) of a lifetime.
