ColdWaterFshr Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Saw a baby one on the Jacks Fork near Alley Spring last year. I read something about the active ingredient in antibacterial soaps, it doesn't break down and is found throughout whole watersheds and in a variety of different fish and other water critters, messes with their reproductive systems, androgynous smallmouth bass, etc.
Wayne SW/MO Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 It is slow in coming and I'm surprised it has taken this long because I don't believe there was ever any doubt where the population was heading. I would hope it would also put a damper on allowing anymore rental canoes on some waters and less on one in particular that I'm familiar with. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Great idea, and since habitat is the one of the main reasons for the decline, we should start a movement to dismantle all the dams on the White river system.
Justin Spencer Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Habitat and pollution, and of course rental canoes! But mostly rental canoes, much like road kill canoes run over thousands per year resulting in them being federally listed. Wayne SW/MO Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Justin while the NFOW doesn't seem to have a rental canoes problem, the Niangua is a virtual highway through a lot of the summer. If 500 people walk through a shoal dragging a canoe, how do you maintain a viable insect population? If you haven't seen the 10AM launch on the Niangua, you should because I believe even you would be amazed. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Justin Spencer Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 If you haven't seen the 10AM launch on the Niangua, you should because I believe even you would be amazed I've heard it is quite a site, and knowing the number of canoes NRO runs I can only imagine. Wayne SW/MO Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 That it is, but I don't blame NRO either because it isn't their place to determine what's good for the river and what isn't, it is the Missouri DNR. The biggest problem is that if the DNR decide it gives a crap about the rivers it will need to get out of the rental business. We need canoe rentals so that many can enjoy the rivers and increase the allies in favor of supporting healthy rivers. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

bigredbirdfan Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I agree this unfortunate. But we could ban people from rivers entirely and it may or may not even save a particular species. We aren't completely in control of natural selection (hence the word natural).
