moguy1973 Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 What's the word on this stretch of the river? I'm heading down to the in-laws near Mt. Vernon this weekend and I might work my way into slipping out to fish a little bit of it if it's anything worth fishing...Any smallies in there? Any easy access points where one could fish from? Any wadeable places? I really don't know much about this river other than I saw it on Google maps and it was near my in-laws' place... -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson

TroutRinger Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I'm kind of curious myself. I've driven over it a couple of times. It looks nice and would definitely like more info. ozark trout fisher Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I've never fished the thing, it being pretty far from home for me, but according to my copy of the Fly Fisher's Guide to Missouri and Arkansas, it does have a good smallmouth population.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted October 8, 2011 Root Admin Posted October 8, 2011 I fish it in the spring for whites and crappie. Have a friend who fishes it all year but he's never mentioned catching any smallmouth.
yaknar Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I have never fished it, but my son lives around Mt. Vernon so I might.Let us know how it went. Apple Butter Making Days this weekend in Mt. Vernon. This is a page out of " A Paddler's Guide to Missouri" from the conservation dept.

moguy1973 Posted October 9, 2011 Author Posted October 9, 2011 Well, didn't have much of a chance to fish this weekend but I did get out for a couple hours today. Accessed the river at the Talbot CA access off CR1082. Didn't bring my wading stuff and I wish I had. Beautiful small stream right there and would have been great to wade and even better to float. Lots of low overhanging trees and sort of steep banks made bank fishing tough. Spent lots of time getting untangled from branches. Didn't see many fish though where I was though. I did catch 4 or 5 log perch on a rooster tail and that's it. I'll definately have to bring the kayak I'm getting in the off season next time to float it. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
