rps Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 A second cousin of mine that I never met passed and had no direct heirs. A large number of people received small unexpected inheritances and I was one. The wife suggested I splurge on some fishing gear I would normally never buy. Those of you who read my posts know I love to fish topwaters. My favorite is the Top Dollar, but I fish standard spooks and poppers as well. I thought I would buy an ultimate rod reel set up for throwing my favorites. Right now I am using a Revo SX on a 6' medium power Falcon Cara. The rod is nine or ten years old but has the perfect length and feel for the baits I use. The reel is the 4th one I have fished on the rod, and the best so far. Other reels have included a 2002 era Curado Bantam (too large), a Curado E7 (self destructed), and the new Lew's (a Johnny Morris in disguise). Top end price for both $700. Suggestions?

Sounds like you have a big problem, you like what you have. Maybe you should duplicate it because it never hurts to have a round ready for the second shot. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Gavin Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Shop for a blank you like, and have Tom Hargrove wrap it for you with the full feather inlay treatment. Blank cost & components for a casting rod are significantly less than those for a fly rod...so you could probably get it for less than $700....just completed a 5' casting rod for walking Sammy's..I used a 6' ML Batson IM7 spinning rod blank and cut it down to 5'..4" straight grip, Fuji ACS Reel Seat, no foregrip. I paired it with a Curado 200E7 and I really like it allot...Incredibly lightweight with a really fast tip...Should be great for Sammy's & Jerkbaits.
Ham Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 6 foot Browning Medallion GT Medium. Thie rod has a short grip and a little shofter action. I'm good with throwing up to 1/2 oz lures on it. You can go custom and get a beautiful heirloom rod, but you can do a LOT worse than this rod For actual fishing quality and spend a lot more on the other rods. Pick a nice high speed bait caster of your choice. I'm partial to Shimanos and Diawas. Minimum of 6:1, but I'd look at the 7:1's too. spool that puppy up with 10, 12, or 14 lb Silver Thread and get after it. Pick your price breakpoint, but I would guess you should be real happy with a reel costing btw $150-$250. Put the left over in a savings acct and add a little to it every month and you'll have a fishing account that you can get an upgrade on a fishing combo every year.
