My brother and I are camping and fishing the Current River Mon and Tues the week of Thanksgiving. We will probably spend most of our time around Tan Vat and Baptist. We were wondering what the brown trout activity is like that time of the year? Is there a spawn going on? How to fish for browns? That sort of thing.

We are fly fishing. And we're 100% catch-and-release.

Fly suggestions would also be greatly appreciated.

The spawn will be over by that time frame, but there should be plenty of eggs in the water...I've said it a few times before, but your best bet for a big brown is to know where they are, get there before daybreak or stay after dark, sneak up, use something big enough to interest a big brown trout, and make your first cast count. If you dont get a take in a couple casts...Move on. Look & hike more than you fish and you will do well. Make a mental note if you find a good one, and come back and try them again if you blank the first time. Good Luck.

Please correct me if I am wrong. For some reason, I thought I had read or heard that the brown trout in that area of the Current (or any area for that matter) are actually sterile. They go through the motions of spawning, but there are no actual eggs produced. The population of brown trout is sustained by stocking.

I feel somewhat sheepish for not knowing.

As an aside, I do know that the house up the street with closed and shuttered windows and overgrown grass is the home of a convicted and paroled serial killer. Scouts honor.

They lay eggs- they're sterile.

The current receives a large stocking of 8-10 inch brown trout each spring (I believe) to sustain the population.

Your right the brown's don't spawn successfully, but like the drunken kid at prom they sure give it the old college try. Not sure if they actually produce eggs that get fertilized or if the egg's just don't survive, but the rainbows sure like egg patterns down there.

I think 99% of eggs don't produce fry or something like that- water is too warm. That's the reason they moved the brown trout hatchery production to Shepherd of the Hills- colder water from the dam gave much better egg survival results. But I have caught a 4" brown trout without clipped fins at Baptist before...
