MaxDrown Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 My friend and I are looking for a smallmouth fly fishing guide. We live in Columbia, MO. We're interested in exploring the smallmouth waters that are relatively close to the Columbia (within 3-4 hours) area. We're especially interested in top-water fishing and we prefer remote areas where possible (i.e., avoiding the canoe hatches). We'd like to learn how to find and catch larger smallmouth. EDIT: We are looking for a professional fly fishing smallmouth guide (to hire for a day of fishing). -- Max Drown

Gavin Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 Call Sam Potter, Brian Wise, Kyle Kosovich, or Brian Sloss if you want to fly fish for them.
ColdWaterFshr Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 Or call Paul Dallas and just pay him in Tito's vodka, beer and cigarettes. Not very dependable though.
MaxDrown Posted November 9, 2011 Author Posted November 9, 2011 We're actually hoping to find some top-water smallmouth fishing closer to home. The EPR is 4+ hours away and the fish don't come to the surface much, if at all. We fish the EPR for trout several times per year. -- Max Drown
moguy1973 Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 Go here and sign up. You'll get a book called 200 Missouri Smallmouth Adventures. It's getting a little out of date, but a lot of the access points are still valid. It's a very usefull book on knowing where to find the best smallmouth fishing in Missouri... http://www.missourismallmouthalliance.org/MSA/Membership.html Lots of good info on the MSA website too... Also Al Agnew on here is a good resource as he's very well versed in the small mouth streams in Missouri... As for good rivers close to Columbia, the Gasconade is probably about as good as it gets for lots of nice smallmouths... -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
MaxDrown Posted November 9, 2011 Author Posted November 9, 2011 Thanks for all the tips and info so far! Just to be clear, we are definitely looking for a professional guide to hire for a day on one of these streams. We also will do lots of exploring and practicing on our own using the tips here and from other sources. -- Max Drown
moguy1973 Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 Ahhh...thought you were talking a guide, as in a manual with access points, tips, etc... My bad understanding... -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson

Al Agnew Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 You're too late for topwater fishing for the year. A couple of excellent guides (friends of mine--I fish with them a lot on their days off) are Nick Hamra and Cory Cottrell. Both are sometimes active on OAF. Cory's family owns Huzzah Valley Campground on the Huzzah and he fishes the Huzzah, Courtois, and Meramec. Nick is based in St. Louis and fishes the Meramec and Gasconade. Neither, however, are fly fishing guides. Sam Potter (another friend) would probably guide you for smallies, and he's strictly a fly fisherman. He's located in the Rolla area.
