aftersh0ck Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 As for them having a high value of common carp. Some here right along with them thought the same way in the late 1800s and decided to stock them here to take alot of the pressure off and expand opportunty with all our real estate. Around the same time is when the trout were tested into our streams. I know it was different groups but they got the choice of fish half right.
Feathers and Fins Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 We are blessed in this area of the country to have so many great lakes, rivers and streams. Carp are what I call freshwater Bonefish, powerful fighters, great for fly fishing. They are a species I enjoy fishing for because they do remind me of days spent on the flats looking for bonefish because they are just like them in so many ways. But why we are blessed is not because of the Carp, Trout, Bass, Stripers or the host of so many other game fish species, nor the bountiful hunting opportunity. In our own country we have areas with sever restriction on where you can fish and worse the price it cost to fish and hunt. Take Diamond Valley Reservoir in California for example: To get in you have to pay $7.00 To launch your boat its $12.00 To Fish you have to pay $3.00 That’s $22.00 each time you go just to get in and fish! I pay $30.00 for my Army Corps pass and that’s it for the year. I wouldn’t even need to pay it if I just launched at a public ramp. Now each time they go to the lake they have to have the boat inspected and if any amount of moisture is in the boat or motor they are rejected and can’t fish it! There are now areas of the Coast of California you can no longer fish from the surf because people trashed it and they said it was fishermen, lord forbid it couldn’t have been the 100,000 people that use the beach daily in summer. Florida there is so many areas the Condo Commandos now have control of you can’t gain beach access to because they put a condo there and run people off. We are lucky here because the people you and I wouldn’t allow it or tolerate it. Because we band together to protect the resource and police ourselves! But also because our Conservation Departments despite the short comings do try and make the outdoors accessible to everyone. We may not always agree with them and certainly criticize them, but they are out ally and try. We are blessed to be able to pull up to a lake and fish it or a stream and enjoy it and even more so the price doesn’t drive people away from the opportunities. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856

That is the cost of a cheap shuttle around here, and even some of the campgrounds charge for similar services (which in my opinion is ridiculous, but if that is want they want to charge, it's THEIR business, I'm not going to pitch a tent like a gypsy and protest) that aren't all that far off from the prices you mentioned back in California.
Justin Spencer Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 even some of the campgrounds charge for similar services Thank you for saying it's our business, darn right we charge for certain things. Have you seen the public access points? We don't want our campgrounds turning into those crazy places! This is how we pay our bills and put food on the table. If you want to park or launch for free there are plenty of places to do so. If you want less hassle and a safer place for your vehicle it's going to cost you a whopping $5. I would be willing to trade that out for some bathroom cleaning and picking up trash around the campground, but most people just want stuff for free and working for it would be a last resort. Guest TLewis74 Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 Brook trout propogation and fish stocking began in US in the 19th century because we were headed in the same direction as Eurpoe. East coast streams were becoming so toxic and ruined that they trout couldn't spawn in them. In most areas of the country that got worse and worse until the environmental movement kicked in. Thanks to that old communist Richard Nixon and a bunch of pinko environmental groups and jack-booted government agencies who enforce the Clean Water Act we DO have fisheries here and many of those were toxic cess pools when the the interventions began. The people talking about undoing all of that aren't on the left. Of course in a lot of places the stocking that was originally used to prop up US fisheries are the only thing keeping them going. If the government decides it can't afford to do that anymore we're going to be in an interesting place. After all the clamor about the money that recreational fishing generates, it's of no use to the US economy if it doesn't generate export income. And for the most part it doesn't. If the government downsizes substantially (and it will), the private sector or some form of cooperative management is going to have to step in. Those locked down chalk trout streams in England are one possible outcome of that. So are the cess pools of the 60s and hoardes of people fishing for carp. We're going to have to do better than the typical black/white left/right kind of thinking to keep the outdoor experience alive in that environment.
Guest TLewis74 Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 Thank you for saying it's our business, darn right we charge for certain things. Don't worry sir, I believe in the free market. The problem I have is paying full shuttle prices when my petro in my vehicle, is primarily being used. Although on longer drives I can understand. Also, again, it is your business and if I don't like it, I can go elsewhere.
Guest TLewis74 Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 I would be willing to trade that out for some bathroom cleaning and picking up trash around the campground. That seems like a fair exchange of services, might take you up on it someday.
Guest TLewis74 Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 but most people just want stuff for free and working for it would be a last resort. Agreed with that as well, the biggest curse of living in a entitlement society.
Justin Spencer Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 The problem I have is paying full shuttle prices when my petro in my vehicle, is primarily being used. Guess we got you by the balls on that one. I charge $25 on your vehicle, $35 on mine if you are the only one going. Cheaper on mine if I'm already going up. For me my time is easily worth $25 an hour, and if one of my employees is shuttling you they get $10 for their time and I get $15 and lose a worker for an hour. We have to charge enough to keep everyone from buying their own canoe and then paying us to haul it, we can spend all day shuttling vehicles and make $100 bucks, or rent 30 canoes and make $1000, what would you do? Let me know when you are down and we can trade services! Listen, I understand your position as a business owner and I respect your practices, but just the same, I AM opperating on a budget as well and I thought I made that clear. Also, the majority of Outfitters have a flat rate for shuttles no matter the scenario. BUT once again that is their right, as it is mine to try to find the most affordable service. Capitolism 101. Justin, if you could, pm some prices of shuttles far upstream on both NFWR & Bryant creek. Love to come down in May and see some stuff I have always wanted to see. Thanks.
