Brian K. Shaffer Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Have you ever given up on a reel ? For one reason or another something about it let you down. Sometimes the drag knob slips and tightens more than needed for no apparent reason, or you cant figure out how to quiet it down or to make it louder ? Is it hard to get into the "guts" of the reel and even when do it looks to confusing to take apart ? Tell us your stories. As a guy who is infatuated with reels, I would love to hear what you guys think. duckydoty Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Several years ago I bought a BPS 270 fly reel that had a detent pin for a clicker that would get grit in it and cause the reel to seize usually while fighting a big fish. Hated that reel. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
Brian K. Shaffer Posted December 16, 2011 Author Posted December 16, 2011 What a cool looking reel with a few major flaws... first for me was the one way bearing. but yikes, grit in the clicker pin detent ?1?!... .. did Bass Pro take care of you on a replace ? or upgrade you ? duckydoty Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Yeah they motivated me to move on to real fishing equipment and I started buying lamson lightspeeds. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
Jason R. Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Yeah they motivated me to move on to real fishing equipment and I started buying lamson lightspeeds. A ranch I worked at had a bunch of old Sage reels, I say old but I am sure they were purchased not that long ago. They were terrible. The drags had all just given out. The other reels were all Ross. They were all working like champs. Of course, these reels were used by guests that didn't know which end to point at the water. They were treated pretty poorly. Point of the story- buy reel from companies that just make reels. Ross reels > Sage Reels. (Also Ross rods < Sage rods). http://flyinthesouth.com/
strangercreek Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I had one of the fly logic premium reels. The spring would pop out when removing the spool (a mini leaf spring setup with plastic clicker). It also had a wierd off white finish that looked like the finish on an old 90s computer monitor, really rough drag, what a piece of junk. I can't remember where I bought it but I returned it. It was American made as well, but not the quality of my Lamson or Teton reels (I also have a collection of Sal Trouts, Progresses, Martin tin can reels, Meisselbachs, Ocean Cities, and other assorted US made reels that still have a useable feel to them)
JCWolfe Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 My first upgrade was a TFO reel. The drag always came loose. It is a backup now, I have 2 allen fly reels and 1 orvis. nothing wrong with those. Okiemountaineer
laker67 Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 used SA reels since late seventies and never had one fail with big or little fish. Love em, dont trust anything else.
