crappiefisherman Posted December 23, 2011 Posted December 23, 2011 My 80 yr old father, who has had heart surgery and a very hard slow recovery wants to go fishing , I am wondering if the vertical spoon bite for kentuckies and whites is still happening .The long creek area is my first choice just because of short boat rides from ramp on cold days.Any info will be appreciated. I havent gone in almost a year because of his health and Im wanting to go myself, to catch fish and to enjoy his last days.Thank you [ [

rangerz21 Posted December 23, 2011 Posted December 23, 2011 I wish i could help you with your father. I am sure some of the good people that know on this board will help you out. I would if i could. More importantly enjoy all the time you can with your dad. I lost my father this year and not only was he my dad but my best friend. If you catch some fish it will be a bonus. Good luck but have fun it will always be something you will remember.
Champ188 Posted December 23, 2011 Posted December 23, 2011 Have you considered hiring a guide for a day and making it a really special outing? I'd strongly suggest you think of Bill Babler, our own moderator of this forum and one of the elite vertical, deep-water guys on the lake. I have personally spoon fished with him and can assure you that your money will be well spent. Hope you and your dad have many remaining special days together.
Members Fishinator Posted December 23, 2011 Members Posted December 23, 2011 Its great to get out with Dad. I miss going with mine. I have been going out in the long creek area and doing well. Look for the bait balls on your graph and you will find the fish in main creek channels. Look for Birds and if you see Loons on the water you are probally in a good area.I caught most of mine on a drop shot (grape color) and my brother was using a spoon. We metered bait from 60ft to 20ft caught most fish between 20 and 30 ft.When the loons dive down the bait will scatter a lttle and come up and the bass are with them, but diving birds are a great indicator also. Good luck! If you can afford to hire a guide it will be a very memorable trip and great knowledge for future trips, I have been out with Bill Babler also and you cant go wrong there he is a wealth of knowledge and a gentleman to boot.Either way you will have a great day just getting out with your dad.

I remember last year we caught a lot of fish and were surprised at seeing 8 of those birds in one small acreage of water by the swim beach at long creek> The loons are everywhere! In 50+ years of fishing this lake, I can't remember ever seeing so many? And the gull population down here is unbelievable. Anyone remember when the loons started showing up here? Either I didn't pay attention, or they were not here 25 years ago. Same with the eagles. It used to be rare to get a glimpse of one, but now I see several almost every day from November to March.
