Wayne SW/MO Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 I have a soft spot for the fly rod Hula Popper when it comes to LM. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
BackCastingGolfer Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Hare are some I've tied up lately, some of them are pretty rough, was just experimenting with most of them. Can't wit to try them out soon!
fishinwrench Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Lookin' good. Freelance bass bug tying is a hoot.

stlfisher Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I just bought a 7 for smallies and pond largmouth thinking and 8 may have been to heavy for these parts. Second guessing a bit after reading this:)
Gavin Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Youll be fine with a 7wt...but I've been know to use an 8 or 9wt at times...Make sure your hooks are sharp (most store bought poppers have dull hooks) and strip strike like Ron described...no trouty hooksets.
BackCastingGolfer Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I'd say the weight of the rod around here really depends on what kind of bass fishing your are doing, or more importantly where. I have an 8wt that is mt bassin' rod, whish is fine for lakes, but is still probably over kill on streams for smallmouth. I wouldn't go above an 8wt. And on another note...on the lae chasing largemouth more movement is probably best, but in the streams going after smallmouth, more often than not the smallies take it on the pause.
Trout Commander Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 . You'll never see a good bass fisherman let a bait sit "until the consentric rings disappear," and for good reasons. This technique catches fish consistently. What is your definition of a "good bass fisherman"? Also, "backbone" has more to do with taper and action than it does weight rating. My 6wt smallie rod has more backbone than my 9wt and the two 10wts I have cast. One of the most common mistakes fly fisherman of all experience levels continue to make is selecting a rod based on the fish they want to catch, rather than the flies they want to cast. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
Njardar Posted February 15, 2012 Author Posted February 15, 2012 Ron, great advice. I will attempt to put it to good use.
