I'm almost afraid to ask how you found out they don't float... the dog or the hair? One of my Scottys loves the pool but because his fur absorbs water he's only got a limited number of splashes before he sinks like a rock. I really need to keep my eye on him.

I found out the Humphry hair caddis doesn't float a couple weeks ago at Crane creek. I'm still holding out hope that future iterations might, however. For one, I need to get hair from the top of his coat and not his undercoat, which feels more absorbent. Secondly, I need to tie the fly with lighter materials. At the time I tied them I only had some really thick thread not even intended for tying flies.

I got a call from my daughter at work the other day: 'You're not going to be happy...' Someone left open the 2 doors to the inner sanctum ('my' part of the basement.) I had several packs of hackle and a bunch of this year's pheasant tails sitting on the workbench. Just hadn't gotten around to putting them away yet. Our older Brittany must have gotten a little bored (never a good thing). It looked like a pheasant stumbled onto a cock fight down there. She mostly got the less expensive died bass bug stuff, but it's still a pretty big loss. Between that, and selling my good hackle during the hackle bubble of 2011, looks like I'm gonna have to restock.

She's currently doing hard time:
