Cocry Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 My first Tenkara rod arrived today. I ordered the TenkaraUSA 5:5 Ayu. I don't know of many people here that do Tenkara, does anyone have experience? I've got one myself, but haven't had a chance to use yet(hopefully this weekend.) Don't listen to the negative bullshit... If you like it, do it. Cant wait to take it to Mill Creek
dave potts Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 With no reel, how do you keep a large fish from making a run and breaking off? Dave
Addicted to Creeks Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 im guessing you run really fast lol Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." It is best to weigh them while they are in the water. The only really large one I ever caught got away with my leader when I first struck him. He weighed ten pounds. —Charles Dudley Warner

Cocry Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 It's a 12 footer. I received it as a present for my bday. Definitely wouldn't have got one that long
BredMan Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I was fishing a small local lake this past summer and I ran into a guy using one of these rods. He told me all about the history of tenkara fishing and showed me how it's used. Interesting concept but limited to small streams as it was designed or maybe used as a bluegill/crappie rod as he was using it. His rod was telescopic which made it easy to pack and carry. Not on my list of fly rods to own but I think it would be fun to use in the right places.
junkman Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 All this is new to me. Never heard of them before. Remember putting many a mile behind a cane pole though. Sounds about like a setup I use. 9 ft. 6 wt fly rod with a little zebco trigger real. When one is a little to large I can give him some line. Sure is fun to use for i haven't perfected the art of casting a fly rod the right way. I mainly use my setup for bass, crappie and bluegill for I have no trout in my area.
flyrodman Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 Cool - I'll try one out when the sticker price comes down - anyone know of an inexpensive (under 70-80 bucks) rod? Addicted - Tenkara is basically a long fly rod with no reel - sort of a fly rod cane pole - check this out: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/N40BOFYKR38" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> You can check out the Fountainhead rods. here is the link http://tenkaraflyfish.webs.com/tenkararods.htm . I'm gonna catch some flack over this... but to me it looks like a passing fad. A fly rod with no reel and line that only is as long as the rod ??? what ... ? The Japanese and their tiny fish can keep this technique. Tenkara isnt limited to line the length of the rod. You can have line lengths up to thirty feet if you wanted to. With no reel, how do you keep a large fish from making a run and breaking off? Dave Check this out. Luke Walz

I'm guessing you have someone else land it for you? Or do you hand reel the line in beceause you aren't going to get close enough to a fish if you have 30' of line...That is unless you have a 30' rod -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
