ozark trout fisher Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 But then you'd have to live in England. Think I'd rather move to Montana and buy my own Montana. That would be okay too. Maybe I'll have to see exactly how many million it will set be back to buy one of the Paradise Valley creeks...
Greasy B Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Didn't Ted Turner already buy Montana? His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974
rfd515 Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Wanted to get a good all-around rod that I could pack easily and that was saltwater capable. Settled on a Ross Flystik 8wt at a decent discount. On the 'want but not really need' list is a Lamson Konic and an Airflo 40+ line.
drew03cmc Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 The Flystik is a nice rod for the price. What is your definition of all around if an 8wt is your choice? I would think that a six weight, while capable of tossing a good size fly at schoolie redfish and bones, and often available with a saltwater seat, would make a better all around choice than a fast, short 8wt. TFO offers their Professional 9' 6wt for $150 and if you rinse the seat judiciously with fresh water after using it in the salt, isn't going to be an issue. In my opinion, the Professional rods are pretty quick (I fish glass and cane) and would be able to buck SOME winds on the flats. Andy
drew03cmc Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 I want a 9' 4 piece 5wt. that will increase my self-worth, make me more attractive to the opposite sex, make my wiener bigger and bring about world peace. short of that, i'd settle for a new outcast featherlight pontoon with some upgraded oars. actually pretty satisfied with my gear at the moment, but have always wanted a steffen brothers 8' 3 piece 5wt. fiberglass rod. also wouldn't mind a new pair of simm's guide waders. Darin, that Steffen rod is a sweet stick. Cameron loves his. A 9' 5wt doesn't make your weiner bigger either, that is a myth, just as the 9' 5wt is the all around trout rod As an alternative to getting bent over for waders, may I suggest the Cabela's Guide waders? If they fail at a seam, Cabela's will honor their product without having to pay shipping, and your location in the KC area makes that an easy choice. Andy

My go-to rod for 99% of my fishing is a 7wt and having enough money to only buy one rod, I chose the 8 over the 6, thinking that if I loved it, maybe I'll add the 6 down the road. The Ross got great reviews and I paid less for the Ross than I would've on the Professional so that's what I ended up with. I also looked at the Echo Solo but couldn't find much in the way of user feedback on it. I've got three young children on one modest salary so finding value is my main goal.
stlfisher Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I just purchased a new 7 weight and some wading boots are in my future. However, with a wedding coming up and a new home purchase that is about it. It is going to be a lean year in the "buying fishing crap for me" department.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I have plenty of fly rods. Just need to tie a few dozen more flies. New R11 fairway woods are a slight possibility. I haven't them yet so I don't know if they are worth it. Pete
Buzz Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I think I am going to try to buy a 3 wt rod this year. Of course I'll have to get a new reel for it too. I'm still researching. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
Members Robert Posted February 20, 2012 Members Posted February 20, 2012 I'm pretty well set on gear. I read about rubber soles being in the state law now or in the future. My seven year Chota STL wading boots were felt bottomed. I called Chota and asked if they could put rubber soles on my boots. I was told I could not, but if I shipped back my STL boots they would sell me a pair of Chota Caney Fork wading boots for $65. USD. The Caney Fork is their top of the line. I jumped at the deal. The rubber on the new boots is very stickey on a wet surface. I'm going to try them without studs first time fishing. Chota builds a great boot in my opinion. I like good support and a ruggard boot, and I get that with Chota. I've been layed up since just after Thanksgiving so, I have had plenty of time to sort things out with my gear. I should be ready for lots of fishing this year.
