Members evnrude18 Posted February 29, 2012 Members Posted February 29, 2012 Went out for the afternoon to try my luck with the bass. Beautiful day! Saw a guy tossin' an A-Rig around...for those that are interested - said the bite was slow and was not catching much on the rig. Found 5 Largemouth 15"+ holding in the weed beds in 10-15 feet of water. The mid-day sun probably took them from the deep and drew them up into fishable waters. Caught them and a lonely 15" crappie throwing a wiggle wart. Water temp was 44.5 - 46.0 degrees. Water temps still too cool to be thinking about the spawn, but, I would suggest focusing on the transitions from shallow to deep. They will come up for a bait, especially if the sun is warming surface temps a bit. I would give another 2 - 3 weeks of consistent warmer weather to get them active for spawning. Let's see what mother nature has in store! ON A SIDE NOTE: I hope the guys fighting the muskie all day on that ultralight finally got him in the boat. For the boats that did go out there Sunday, they were still fighting a 55"+ muskie on 4lbs test and an ultra light rod at 5:00 pm... after hooking into it around 10:30 am. That fish took them on a ride all over Fellows.
fishinwrench Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Nice work, man ! Any idea what area of the lake the muskie bit? If they wete crappie fishing I assume that he bit in less than 10 fow
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 I wonder how they kept it from cutting the line? They should have kept him in the boat when they weighed him. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Members evnrude18 Posted March 1, 2012 Author Members Posted March 1, 2012 I have no clue as to how they fought it that long and didn't break him off. They swore up and down they saw it surface a couple times and it was a huge muskie... only to lurk back into the depths before making an attempt to net/drag it into the boat. Securtiy was on their way out to get them off the water at sunset while I was loading the boat. I do know that they caught him while fishing the marked brushpile near the spillway... and that pile is only 12 - 15 feet deep at the moment. Spoke with another boat that confirmed a report by the MDC i had read a while back on the internet - 2 years ago MDC shocked portions of the lake and found a 60"+ muskie in their findings. Crazy...

" I'd like to know where you found that information on the internet. Perhaps that was 50"+. Even at that, a 50"+ muskie is good results for MDC work.
Members Bill Y. Posted March 7, 2012 Members Posted March 7, 2012 The MDC took out a 51 inch muskie during spring sampling at Fellows... There has never been any 60 inch muskies. The State Record muskie is 49 ½ inches long and came out of the Niangua Arm of Lake of the Ozarks back in 1981.
Members evnrude18 Posted March 8, 2012 Author Members Posted March 8, 2012 Easy there tiger(s)... it has been a few years since I read the report, I very well had been wrong. I admit that. The guys I spoke with only spoke of past "stories". If it was indeed a 51 inch muskie taken out of Fellows a couple years ago... that Muskie could very well be 60 inches by now. : )
Members Muskie Bob Posted March 9, 2012 Members Posted March 9, 2012 I was curious about the muskie being netted during the spring sampling. So, I contacted Craig fuller, Muskellunge Program Coordinator. In his resonse, the said the following: "There was a large muskie caught during the spring sample on Fellows Lake last year (March 31, 2011; Length – 51 inches; Weight – 35 pounds). " Not only did Craig attach a picture of the muskie (I can't figure out how to include it), but attached forms to participate in the “Show-Me Muskie Project”. If you know anyone who may be interested, key on the following for more information..... http://mdc.mo.gov/fishing/fish-catch/game-fish/muskie/show-me-muskie-project

This state record fish was caught by the late Gene Snellings near bridal cave. I think it weighed in at 41.5 lbs, and I also think it was caught on a wiggle wart. The mount was displayed at Van Hooks bait shop on north 5, and may still be there.
Members Muskie Bob Posted March 9, 2012 Members Posted March 9, 2012 More trivial state record history that was written by Kevin Richards who verified the record......click on "Mo State Record" on the following link. http://www.missourimuskies.org/ from that article......... March 9, 1981 “near Shorecrest Resort” thee monster tuned out to be 49 ½ inches long and weighed a whopping 41 pounds 2 ounces. The girth was 25 inches The muskie was caught on a bone-colored Bomber.
