BassMaster#1 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I'll make this short and sweet. I had an hour before dinner so I told the wife yesterday evening I was going to head to the local lake to get some fishing before dinner. Much to my suprise it would be one of the best hours of fishing I have ever had. I started out with a bomber square A and hooked up with a 5lber that broke my line. I'm not blaming it on a poor knot so it must have been bad line ;-) . The funny thing was she surfaced a few seconds later trying to throw my lure. I thought OK you win some and lose some I probably won't get a nother nice one like that the rest of the evening. I tied on a RC1.5 and immediltly landed a 4.5lber Snaped a picture and thought no way it would get any better than this. I moved down the bank a little made some more cast and landed a 4lber. I thought man this is awsome lets see if I can get one more before I have to leave. I proceded to fish some more and landed 3.5lber. That's been my best hour at a lake ever. Can't wait to get back out there. The fish are probably going to be spawning here soon with the way the weather has been.

Bill Jr. Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Spring is here! isn't it fun! Iactually went out to a local lake yesterday evening from 6:00-7:15 and the lake was alive!!! At sunset bass were boiling and it was great to see. Caught 4 with the biggest about 3 1/4 and lost 2 but it's awesome to be able to go out after work and unwind for an hour or 2. Caught mine on a Thin Fin but i bet the Bomber Square A would have worked as well. I'm loving daylight Savings! Good Fishing!
Bill Jr. Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Bass Master What area are you fishing? I'm in the St. Louis area. This week turned them on big time.
BassMaster#1 Posted March 16, 2012 Author Posted March 16, 2012 I'm in the west county area. I spoke to a buddy of mine yesterday who went out to his farm pound in pacific and caught 25 in a little over an hour. Most of them were in the 1.5lb range with a few in the 2lb range. The funny thing was he caught 85% of them on a buzzbait. The fish are really getting warmed up for him to catch that many on a buzzbait.
Bill Jr. Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Totally agree. I haven't tried a buzzbait or topwater but the water has definately warmed up quick. I went out for an hour after Mizzou lost today but only caught 2 small ones. pretty muddy with the rains today but you could see a bunch chasing shad. Need to go to BPS for a couple cranks but can't wait to go again!
Haris122 Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Still did better than me. I went yesterday evening for 3 hours before and while it was raining, and then today evening again for another hour and a half. I know the lake I went to has fish there, and they're active, but I felt like they were just trying to make me feel stupid. Never bit once. Oh well, tomorrow morning I'm at it again.
BassMaster#1 Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 You bet thats what keeps you going back. I went out this morning again for about an hour 8 - 9:15 and manage to hook up with some nice ones again. First catch was a 2lb catfish on a Lukey strike square bill. This was pretty weird, but as weird as it was I always manage to catch at least 2 cats through out the summer on a crankbait or spinnerbait while fishing. I also caught 2 19" inchers that went somewhere around the 4lb mark and one 18" somewhere around upper 3's. They all had big belly's, but not sure if their bedding yet. I'm just loving life right now...Nice weather and the fish are bitting. Well I got to go fishing for a little this morning guess its time to fulfill my end of the bargain and take the wife to the botanical gardens. I"m sure that's not a good think to do when you have allergies, but what can I say. To bad for Mizzou, but at least the billikens are still in it.
Haris122 Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I went out this morning again for about an hour 8 - 9:15 and manage to hook up with some nice ones again. Where to do you fish, and can you give me some of your skill? Woke up early today, went to Unger Park, and stayed there for over 4 1/2 hours. Nothing. Hail and strong rain from the storm chased me into the car for half an hour, got back out, next half hour nothing again. Starts raining lightly too. Then as if to emphasize to me to stop, it starts pouring again (thankfully no hail that time). Once the 2nd one hit full force, I decided to accept reality and head home. Though I was certain it would stop for good right as I got out of there. On the bright side, I seem to have been wrong. If anyone stayed after that 2nd rain outbreak, right now it seems to be biting them in the rear judging from what it's like outside.
BassMaster#1 Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 I'm sorry, but as an avid fisherman I can't give up my hot spot otherwise it probably wouldn't be a hot spot anymore. I have no promblems giving up my lures. I like to use the square a bomber's, Luckly strike square bills and the Lucky craft 1.5's if you can still find them. The colors I like to use in the dark warter like Unger Park and simpson lake are copper perch and firetiger also good on the meramec. These fish I've caught seem to hit it on the pause using a 6 gear ratio reel. I started the morning of with a 5 gear ratio with no success and after 15min swithced to my 6 gear ratio which seemed to do the trick for me. I would get about three revolutions of the reel in then pause for 3 - 5 seconds and that was when these strikes would happen. Have you had much success at unger park? I fished there once in the fall with a buddy, but it was really shallow at that time. I suspect that with floods it would be a pretty a good lake to fish. I was going to hit the meramec on Monday, but with all the floods I might just shoot for simpson lake and see what's going on there. Any one have any luck withen the past week there? Thanks and let me know if this work for you.
