Members walker04 Posted March 27, 2012 Members Posted March 27, 2012 In years past I have limited my fishing to white bass, crappie, and perch; using mostly 6lb test and 1/8 oz lures. I have used a light rod 5'6" - 6', but ensuring that it is stiff enough for that 15-16" white, and sensative enough for the 10" crappie and making sure I don't rip his face off while setting hook. 2pc rods frustrate me after 1 fishing season as they seem to lose their tackiness at the join and twist or seperate after a dozen casts. This year I find myself fishing for walley and SM/LM bass more. Realizing that the fish can be bigger, Im looking to get a 1pc rod that is appropriate for the fishing. I have heard everything from light to heavy, and understand that I may use something different for a wiggle wart that I would use for a pig'n'jig. I wanted your feedback on what you use for what?
Moswimb8slinger Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I'm partial to ugly sticks, but some people say their too heavy or too limber, but i really like my baitcasting 6-6 ugly stick "lite", they have blue thread instead of the traditional red/yellow, their lighter than a regular ugly stick and mine is a medium action, and i toss everything from 3/16oz spinnerbaits/ chatterbaits to larger 6-7" jerkbaits and topwaters. and its one piece. I've caught snad sharks, an 8lbs. striper, 25in walleye, 4lbs+ LM and SM bass on it, and when paired with 20lbs. spiderwire braid and a good reel, it'll cast your lure over the horizon, or just right where you want it. plus its affordable too at about $45
Dutch Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I assume you mean a spinning rod but you never stated as much. For baits larger than you mentioned and for a spinning reel I use 6'6" rods that are medium power with a fast tip. I have several and no 2 of them are exactly alike. So I would go to a store and ask to see rods in your price range and play around with them until you find one that you think will do the job. Then match it up with a 2500 series spinning reel in your price range.

Feathers and Fins Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Not sure the price rang you are looking in but I would suggest the Shimano CVSFL76MB baitcaster. Or in casting TMS76ML. I am just a fan of shimano gear with the warranty and they work. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Moswimb8slinger Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 sorry, it is a baitcasting rod and a "Lite" series, it does have a fast tip, but its not as stiff as the BPS extreme rod i tried last summer.
brother dave Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I like loomis for hardware work. My dog likes them for snacks. My wife likes the life time warranty I shop at the outdoor grocery store
Wayne SW/MO Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 If you're talking rivers you're probably fine as you are. If you want to add a rod then go up to a medium, but the brand will depend on hoe fat your billfold is. I think the Berkley lightening is probably the best value in the low cost rods. I don't know why you're having a problem with 2 piece rods, I've never had that problem and I've had a few. if they are wearing at the ferrules it might be that they are picking up grit from somewhere or just the brand. Regular Ugly sticks are fine for the very casual fishermen, especialy if he's hard on equiptment, but aside from that they suck. The glass tip doesn't match the rest of the rods action and they are heavy from all the glass added to make them tough, and they are tough. If you're going to spend more I think thier are better rods at BPS in their brands. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
ollie Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Falcon brand loyal here. Great customer service and they are out of Oklahoma so not too far away. slider Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I'm a Loomis man, I would go with a lite or medium lite. I also have a Bionic Blade from Bass Pro that I like but it's not a Loomis just a little easier on the wallet. DONT EVER GIVE UP MOSES WAS A BASKET CASE ONCE!
