moguy1973 Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Nothing was biting whatsoever... Had a good float though. Water surface temps were between 67* when we started around 7:45 and 72* when we pulled out at 3pm. We also paddled up the Big River about half a mile or so. Water was pretty murky and you could only see down about a foot and a half, if that. Had one strike on a Sammy, but that's about it. Saw a lot of carp, gar and drum coming to the surface, nothing else though. Got a picture of the confluence at the Big looking upstream. Smalliebigs Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 How did the Lowrance do??? you need to paddle up the Big as far as you can and find some deep cuts...there are fish there, they just only feed actively for short burst through out the day.A four inch White curly tail grub w/a Roadrunner head works very good around any wood with some flow in that area.any meduim diving crank that looks alot like a shad does well if you can find the right ambush points.....with your Lowrance and some paddling you should be able to find the right holes.some very big bass have been caught were you paddled.....very big
awhuber Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 According to this report, you should go down stream a little futher. I was impressed on how clear structure showed up on it. I think I only saw maybe a couple fish signatures on it though. I would have expected to get a few catfish or carp or something at least show on it. It was interesting too seeing the differences in the depth of the river from side to side too. Coming up on Rt66, the left hand side of the river showed between 8-10ft, but the right side was only 2-4ft. My buddy I was with was throwing just about everything at them, although he didn't really bring any finess lures such as grubs and smaller things. I mainly used a white tailed and a chartruse tailed road runner, the Sammy, a white and chart spinnerbait, and a few square bill cranks (one of which I lost, I just switched over to 8lb Nanofil line and I'm not sure I like it. Seems to break real easy) I think my buddy is kind of turned off on the lower stretches of the Meramec since he's really never caught any fish there, although today we were talking of maybe putting in around Byrnes Mill on the Big and floating to Rt66 sometime. He also wants to do the stretch from Red Horse up to Green Meadow... -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
