Guest Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I walked outside our house right after the News Conference regarding Coach Petrino's firing. Immediately, I heard a "woman screaming". My first thoughts were a domestic dispute about the bad news. LOL Then it got louder and more frequent. It was obvioulsy a large panther or mountain lion. Keep in mind, Im standing in a 6 acre yard by myself in the dark, unarmed with only a small flashlight. The animal was 150 yards from my location, in a draw where our deer cross the road. I jumped in the truck and drove to the spot where all the noise was coming from and it stopped. I called the AGFC hotline and spoke to their dispatcher for about 20 minutes. He assured me that I wasnt in danger, I kinda laughed at that. I have no video or audio evidence, however I was encouraged to check the area for tracks in the daylight. Long story short, theres a large cat on the ground in western Washington County.
Bill Jr. Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 WOW! Do you have any dogs on your property? Maybe time to invest if you don't.
Guest Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 WOW! Do you have any dogs on your property? Maybe time to invest if you don't. Yessir, the game and fish encouraged me to keep them inside the fenced area. My neighbors have horses next to our treeline and the deer usually follow it to the creek. I knocked on theyre door but they didnt answer. Of course its 9pm, I probably scared those folks. I intend to tell all my neaghbors to keep an eye out.
Bill Jr. Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I'm sure he is watching that food "highway" the deer ar traveling on. Maybe not the best time to go look for morels...
drs7558 Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 I love mountain lion stories. Theres not a doudt in my mind that they have been in Missouri, for many years, not just the last few years. I saw one thirty-five years ago around Table Rock Lake. But thats another story. Heres a current mountain lion story for you. I recently returned from a vacation trip with my wife, in Palm Beach Florida. It was a great trip. While there we visited a wild life sanctuary several miles inland. It was privitaly owned but due to cost increases to feed the animals, the owner started providing guided tours to the public for a fee. It was a great experience, many big cats on the tour. African lions, tigers, leopards and of course mountain lions. The cats were housed in very large cages, made of 4x4's and heavy cyclone fenceing. There was a covering on top of the cages, depending on if the cats could climb or not. Visiters could approach within 2 feet of the cages, very close. Everyone kept thier distances from the cats due to them tending to try to "mark" visiters. Our guide said "its just like your everyday house cats mark its territory at home". BS the cats were just trying to piss on humans. We got to the last cage, the mountain lion cage. There was a male and female in the cage, half way across the cage, to far away to piss on me. Being interested in mountain lions, I approached very close to get a better look at the big cat that I so admire. The male cat stared intintly at me. It felt as if he was starring directly into my eyes. I stared directly back, into his eyes. Suddenly the big male(about 150lbs) charged at me, screaming, hissing, and clawing, bouncing off the fence. He continued this very agressive behavior until I walked away from the cage at the insistance of the guide. The guide explained this agressive behavior. "He was protecting his lady, their in love". Ya, what ever. All I know is none of the other cats acted like this, they were all just curious and wanted to piss on you. That male mountain lion would have ate me up, if that fence wasn't there. I would love to see another mountain lion in the wild, but I hope I'm well armed if I do.
Guest Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 No doubt, no cats gonna piss down my neck. LOL I felt like the game and fish tried to bait me into shooting the big cat. You know, make their job easier. They need a specimen to show off to the public, which they've never been able to accomplish. Dispatcher: "if you want, go in there with your spot light and see if you can identify it" Uggh, no. I'm not going into a dark thicket with a friggin mountain lion armed with only spot light and pistol. this reminds me of a Jerry Clower story...
fishinSWMO Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Did anybody watch American Digger? They walked up on a big cat looking for Indian relics. Jeremy Dodson
dennis boatman Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 I didn't know Mountain Lions were interested in Indian relics... A strike indicator is just a bobber...
Addicted to Creeks Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 hahahahahahahaha Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." It is best to weigh them while they are in the water. The only really large one I ever caught got away with my leader when I first struck him. He weighed ten pounds. —Charles Dudley Warner
fishinSWMO Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 I didn't know Mountain Lions were interested in Indian relics... This one sure was! Haha. He scared that big guy on the show so bad they packed up and left the area. Jeremy Dodson
