Members FullTiltAngler Posted April 22, 2012 Members Posted April 22, 2012 Had a good buddy of mine dock fishing for crappie at my spot at the 8mm and told me the fishing yesterday was lousy. Said he could'nt buy a bite if he tried. Was curious if anyone was having any better luck either in this area or others around the lake. I am aware the water levels are still way down(even though I don't get why Ameren is not in the process of gettin it filled up for summer boat action) and also suspect due to the major cold front that came through at the end of the week did'nt help him on his quest. I figure the spawn should be well under way if not at the tail end but have been hearing different reports through last week. Am planning on being up there over this up coming weekend so trying to get any info or opinions I can. Thanx for any input and good fishin' to all and be safe out there.
Members CapnKenny Posted April 22, 2012 Members Posted April 22, 2012 A friend of mine mentioned that he has been picking up a few fish using minnows behind the docks....but generally fishing has been tough.
Members FullTiltAngler Posted April 22, 2012 Author Members Posted April 22, 2012 How low is the lake level right now and what are water temps sitting at since this front moved through. I wonder if our lack of winter has really thrown a curve into things this year. I'm starting to think this year may not be anywhere near close to how good crappie fishing was last season.
fishinwrench Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 LL is 656.9 and surface water temps vary depending on where you are (ranging from 51-60). Alot of the females (of all species) still have eggs, even the Walleye.... so the best is yet to come I think.
Members any and all fishing Posted April 22, 2012 Members Posted April 22, 2012 i've caight more this year than any other year..mostly because i've kept going back, usually one or two trips to warsaw, this year its been 5. Crappie have been thick below the dam. use 1/8 or 1/4 oz. orange heads and green or white slab masters from the station bait shop. on cooler days they're deeper so use the 1/4 oz cast out as far as you can let it sink at a 10 to 12 count, then retrieve as slow as you can stand to. You will get your limit. the colder weather slowed them down a bit, but i still limit in about an hour. 2 weeks ago it only took 30 minutes. Brian Coen Urbana Mo.
Members VIP Posted April 22, 2012 Members Posted April 22, 2012 Caught double my limit of 8" crappie today around the Larry Gale access. Couldn't find any keepers, and those ones we did find were scattered. We did manage to catch some whites while trying to find them crappie. The big ones were female full of eggs. Dozen or so sub 9". Large mouths were on chunk rock with a spinnerbait and a couple on a crankbait. Rough day with the wind, but good day out.
gramps50 Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 We were down around Lynn Creek and could have limited out if the length was 8" instead of 9" most we caught were 1/8-1/2" short. Jigs were working but the bait of choice was minnows.
Members FullTiltAngler Posted April 25, 2012 Author Members Posted April 25, 2012 Thanks for all the info gentleman. I will be up on my spot at the 8mm over this entire weekend so any other info I can get for the remainder of the week would be greatly appreciated and will be sure to let all know how it went when I get back home. I did see there is a weak cold front moving through friday-saturday but I don't think it should be a problem. Good fishing to all and be safe out there.
Members captain belly Posted April 26, 2012 Members Posted April 26, 2012 Gravois arm on 4/24. 8 hours of fishing..... My buddy and I caught a total of 6 crappie. We fished everything in the box. Fished deep, shallow, docks, brush, stickups, ..... Everything. Yet still better than being at work
