Jason R. Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 These suckers are fun. Took forever to hook one even though they were everywhere. I wrote it up long style on my little blog thing. I think I'm already an addict. http://flyinthesouth.com/
Greasy B Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 Great catch. I have yet to catch a carp on a fly. My nephew Art who is something of a veteran at carp on the fly says they can only be caught when actively feeding or tailing. Was this fish tailing? His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974
Jason R. Posted April 26, 2012 Author Posted April 26, 2012 He was feeding on algae as it floated by but not tailing per se. I cast at a bunch of tailing carp but they did not comply. http://flyinthesouth.com/
Wayne SW/MO Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 Nice they have been on my bucket list, on the fly, for a long time. They are great fighters, wary, and have all the qualities of a game fish except for table fare. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Jason R. Posted April 27, 2012 Author Posted April 27, 2012 Ya I had been wanting/trying to catch one for a while- turns out its really hard. Ive had several eat the fly but landing them is a different story. Anyone who catches these things consistently is pretty skilled (not me). http://flyinthesouth.com/
Feathers and Fins Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Congrats and welcome to the Dark Side. AKA Freshwater Bonefishing.. So how was his first run? Give you heart failure? https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Jason R. Posted April 27, 2012 Author Posted April 27, 2012 Yep pretty much- what a cool fish. http://flyinthesouth.com/
Addicted to Creeks Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 congrats, its on my list Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." It is best to weigh them while they are in the water. The only really large one I ever caught got away with my leader when I first struck him. He weighed ten pounds. —Charles Dudley Warner
laker67 Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 congrats on the first carp. A hard fighting, long first run, test your reel drag and your skills kind of fish. They will hit most flies when in the feeding mode. Your best bet is to create your own feeding frenzy. I use dog food and can hold fish in the area for several hours. As a bonus the buffalo and eventually catfish, will come in as well. Buffalo are hard fighters but cannot match the drag burning run of a carp. Caught on the long rod, it is almost as much excitement as a large trout.
