I do not think we will get the same service we get at HLS, box stores dont have the personal feel or pay near the attention to the anglers. Im sure Cabelas will carry the hunting stuff I need but im doubtful they will have the gear that works best around here.

But more is I like to be able to sit around and talk to the guys at HLS employee's owners and other anglers. If I had one suggestion to HLS it would be to put in a table and sit down area in the rogers store like in the BV store. Its nice to be able to sit down and talk outdoors. I have to give them credit though the archery shop i didnt think would do good but i have a hard time not finding what i need and when i wanted some broadheads Nick had them in fast.

What would really be nice is a Rod and Gun Club where guys could sit around tie jigs, flies whatever, a bar and a "pro" shop like the golfers have but with a range instead of a golf course. As a young man I spent most of my time in one in Germany and learned more on that range with old soldiers with a beer or two in them then I ever learned in "training". Was a lot more gun than rod club due to Germany's fishing regulations but we did sit and swap fishing stories a lot. I did buy guns I never would have also because someone would say "hay ever shot one of these" then I would try theirs and go back into the shop and buy one.

They didn't sell any shoes or women's clothing at that club though and I guess that is where the money is today in sporting goods.

Not many of those kinds of clubs left. When I was a much more active hunter in MN, we had a couple of those. And I always enjoyed going to them. But, like so many outdoor sports, the average age is growing quickly and participation is dropping. Cost of shooting trap these days is not helping them, either.

August 30 is the date I've been told.

Chris Johnson, who worked at HLS, will run their fishing dept from what I've heard.

Great choice, I applied but I couldn't hold a candle to Chris. Think I can beat him on the water 50% of the time ;) but his sales experience and customer base in this area is unmatched. I really miss Chris's bait shop, he had a great store on Newhope back in the day and he and his wife treated everyone who came in the door like long lost friends.

Agreed. Chris and Lucy are great folks. Cabela's chose well there. I hated to see him leave HLS, but I sure wish him the best.

Went by the store over the weekend. Sign out front says they're opening on Thursday, 8/30 at 9am.
