Tying Video: Mike Schmidt's Meal Ticket

As soon as I said that I was going to do Mike Schmidt's patterns after I finished the Galloup Series I got a TON of requests for the Meal Ticket. Rightfully so, this fly isn't crazy huge, or 'too' heavy. It can be fished on a 6wt and is equally as good of a smallmouth fly as it is for trout....just a super cool fly.

Excellent video. One question, how do you decide how many beads you are putting on the articulation point? I've seen some with just one and some with three like this one.

And I assume the opposing hook points is just to help with hook ups?

I've used Senyo laser dub inplace of wool. it can also be trimmed.

What I have noticed about the beads is the bigger the fly the more the beads. You can kind of think of them as "space fillers" and if you have an extra-long fly you don't want that second hook to be too close to the head so you can toss a couple more beads in the articulation point. I use 4 beads on the Double Deceiver.

As for the opposing hooks, that I am not 100% sure about. That is how Schmidt ties it so I went ahead and did it that way. 9 out of 10 big fish will be hooked on the front hook so I can see good and bad points for doing it this way.

I honestly think you could pretty much completely replace wool with Lazer Dub. It isn't 'quite' as thick and takes more material to get a thick head compared to wool, but on the other hand it has that great amount of flash, makes a great brush, and has some GREAT colors. I use it a lot on big flies.

I think it would be pretty cool, I know if there were somewhere in the ball park of 15-20$ I would buy one.

That is very cool....but in all seriousness, I wouldn't know how to go about that. I would do it myself but the technical part of videos such as compression rates, and working with the file itself (to make the videos fit onto a dvd without losing quality) I know enough about to be dangerous. I can do everything an "editor" can, but that is about all my knowledge. I appreciate the idea and, quite frankly, I think it is pretty cool you brought it up.

One thing you 'can' do if you have an HD television is hook up an HDMI cord to your computer or laptop (if they have a port) and watch the videos directly from youtube on your television, in almost full HD.
