Addicted to Creeks Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 The shop at montauk is top notch (EDIT: REEDS) , i would recommend anyone going through the area stop in ( i dont work there....swear) Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." It is best to weigh them while they are in the water. The only really large one I ever caught got away with my leader when I first struck him. He weighed ten pounds. —Charles Dudley Warner
3wt Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 There certainly are many more fly rodders at Montauk than when I started as a kid in the early 90's. Almost everybody in the fly area holds a fly rod. It used to be the opposite.
Addicted to Creeks Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 i have noticed the same thing, and it seems like there are a lot more people in the fly area than the campground sections now. Although that could be due to the fact that as i have gotten older we started going during the week more often than weekends to avoid crowds Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." Kayser Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 If I needed anything for fly fishing while I was living in Rolla (last year, especially), I would just make a run down to the Current and stop at Reed's. They don't have the same selection as the shops in STL, but that would just be an insane overhead. They carry pretty much everything you might need for fly-fishing at Montauk, or MO in general. The only thing you might ask for is a wider selection of tippet brands, and possibly hooks. But like I said before- overhead. So just stop at Reed's for your reasonably priced fishing needs. If they don't have it, you can probably get by without it. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Members kbbgood Posted June 19, 2012 Members Posted June 19, 2012 I for one would sure like it . Would save a lot of mileage into the city to get some materials. And it would pay off cause of the other water, not just the park crowd.

Rob Back when I was at school in Rolla (late 90's early 00's) I would run down to Montauk and most of the time be stuck with buying whatever was at the lodge. Luckily they have always had RIO leader and tippet which is the only brand I have ever really bothered with. But as for fly tying materials etc i had to rely on trips to stl to stock up. Anyway I guess my point is that I often found myself alone on the stream shorthanded on something because I either couldn't buy it, didn't have the materials to tie it or was just broke because carrying a job and going to engineering school (plus trying to fish) was pretty impossible. I'm very glad Reeds has stepped it up down there. I was really impressed with their selection, and it's also nice to know that if you ever break a rod during a trip, you can go get a moderately priced TFO. In the past I was always concerned that if I broke my rod I'd be stuck with a shakespeare from the lodge. And as a side note- if you're still in school down there, go fish as much as you can. I regret not doing it more when I had the time and was living in the perfect launching point for trout in missouri. I only fished bennet like twice when I was down there, Meremace at cardiac once, the little piney like twice. I fished Montauk and the Current more, but not enough. If I had it to do again I would have been on a stream at 5am every saturday.
