Nick Williams Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Hey I am considering taking my youth group on a float on the last weekend in June and I am considering the Elk River for our destination. I am curious though, how big of a "party" river is it? I have floated part of the Elk before but I don't remember much in that respect. What I do remember was the cool crystal clear waters and clean campgrounds. There are other rivers closer and stuff, but I'm trying to get some of the details figured out. I'm hoping to make it tithe river this weekend to check it out, but still looking for any advice and such. - Nick
Nick Williams Posted June 11, 2012 Author Posted June 11, 2012 Ha and that's to the river, not tithe! 😉 - Nick
DaddyO Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Nick, I don't know about the Elk River, however, if you go to the Upper Illinois, you'll want to make the trip during the week to avoid as much of the party crowd as possible. i.e. Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. DaddyO, Yeah, I've been to the UIR, it wasn't enjoyable because of the party crowd, ha and the water wasn't the most enjoyable either! I did consider weekdays, but some of the sponsors going, as well as myself, would have to take off work. So that ruined that option! - Nick
darbwa Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 The Elk on a Saturday is crazy. It is like a partying traffic jam on a river. Plenty of friendly people though.
Chief Grey Bear Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 NO! Not for a youth group. You should have to be 21 to float that river! OKFlyFisher44 Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 I am with the other members. I float that river fairly often and its a non stop party train. 95% of the floaters r all super friendly but they r there to have a " good time" which means drinking cold beer and being "rowdy". Not exactly the place for a youth group IMO. Go during the week and u will have the place mostly to yourself. Nick Williams Posted June 12, 2012 Author Posted June 12, 2012 Well besides going in the middle of the week, which I agree would probably be better though I am trying to avoid it. What other river would you guys say then? - Nick
Justin Spencer Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 Here on the North Fork of the White we have scout troops and youth groups most every weekend. Every river will have its partiers on the weekends but since we are farther away from the cities we get less of that than most, you will have to drive a ways, but I am confident you will come back once you see the river and campground. You would want to do the Hammond to Sunburst float (less partiers than from here downstream). If you took the 8:00 shuttle you would have the river to yourselves for much of the day and would probably stay ahead of the party groups who typically start later and float extremely slow. The springs keep our water good even in dry years like this one. Check out our website or give us a call if interested. www.sunburstranchcanoe.com The eleven point might be a good choice also, not sure about their party crowd however. I think I have actually floated part of that stretch before. It was a very beautiful river. Unfortunately, what keeps those parties away is the same downside for me. That is quite a drive to make for a Friday Saturday trip. I'm in Owasso, OK which is just north of Tulsa, so the closer the better. This is turning into a challenge! - Nick
