Greasy B Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 I think I have actually floated part of that stretch before. It was a very beautiful river. Unfortunately, what keeps those parties away is the same downside for me. That is quite a drive to make for a Friday Saturday trip. I'm in Owasso, OK which is just north of Tulsa, so the closer the better. This is turning into a challenge! I'll bet with some extra effort and some good timing you can avoid the crowds. What about starting at dawn? I mean shove off at first light 5:00 am. On a lot of rivers that will out you 4 hours ahead of the first wave of partiers. Our regulars have decided an extra few hours drive time is well worth it to avoid having their vacation ruined by crazy naked partiers. Not sure how nudity could ruin a vacation, but I guess it might not be the best with a youth group. Good luck! That is a good idea, but you will have to pay for it, outfitters already go from dawn to well after dusk on weekends, getting us up earlier is hard to do, plus I doubt the kids want to be up at 4 to eat and go float in the cool of the morning. Nick Williams Posted June 12, 2012 Author Posted June 12, 2012 That is a new idea I haven't considered though, and something that won't hurt to check out. But Justin is probably right, I don't think even I would want to have to be in the river getting wet that early without my waders. - Nick

I will consider your advice! Thanks! - Nick
Members bobtu Posted June 12, 2012 Members Posted June 12, 2012 We don't float on the elk on Saturdays with our 7 and 9 year old kids. We do however on ANY day but Saturday
Chief Grey Bear Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 You will not out run them. I hit the Elk early on Saturday this weekend and they were moving in droves by 9:00. You can't out run them! LOL!!! I would suggest Waters Edge by the Undercliff. It is between Joplin and Neosho. It doesn't have the rowdy's the Elk does. ollie Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 I have to agree with others. Not a place for a youth group of teens on the weekend. Chief has a good idea and I know that stretch isn't crowed at all. Anywhere around the Elk in the summertime is crazy. Granted you won't find AS many during the week, but there can be times,........... fishinSWMO Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 If you enjoy constant highway noise that's a great place. I would check into floating the lower end of the elk, I think most of the parties end at Noel, not sure but I bet some friendly outfitter could tell you. Jeremy Dodson

I've tried to contact several outfitters on the Elk and haven't heard anything back yet. I will look into the lower end see what I can find. - Nick
